Chapter 1
1
These are the sod (secret) davarim (words) that the living Yeshua (Jesus) spoke, and Yehudah Tomas (Judas Thomas) wrote down. And He said, “Whoever hears these davarim (words) and understands them will never taste mavet (death).”
2
Yeshua said, “Let the seeker not stop seeking until he finds. When he finds, he will be troubled. When he is troubled, he will be amazed. When he is amazed, he will rule over everything. And when he has ruled, then he will rest.”
3
Yeshua said, “If they tell you, ‘Look! The Malchut (Kingdom) is in the sky,’ then the birds of the air will get there before you. If they tell you, ‘It is in the yam (sea),’ then the fish will get there first. But I tell you, the Malchut is inside you—and it is outside you. Whoever knows himself will be known, and he will know that he is a son of the living Abba (Father). But if you do not know yourselves, you live in aniyut (poverty)—and you are that poverty.”
4
Yeshua said, “An old man full of days will not hesitate to ask a child of sheva (seven) days about the place of chayyim (life), and he will live. For many who are first will be last, and they will become echad (one).”
5
Yeshua said, “Know what is before your eyes, and what is hidden from you will be revealed. For there is nothing hidden that will not be uncovered.”
6
The talmidim (disciples) asked Him, “Do you want us to tzom (fast)? How should we pray? Should we give tzedakah (alms)? What mitzvot (commandments) should we observe when eating?” Yeshua answered, “Do not lie, and do not do what you hate—because everything is revealed before Shamayim (Heaven). For there is nothing hidden that will not be revealed, and nothing covered that will not be uncovered.”
7
Yeshua said, “Blessed is the lion that a man eats, for the lion becomes human. Cursed is the man that a lion eats, for the man becomes a beast.”
8
And Yeshua said, “The Malchut is like a wise fisherman who cast his net into the yam (sea) and pulled it up full of small fish. Among them he found a large, good dag (fish). He threw all the little fish back into the yam and kept the large fish without trouble. Whoever has ears to hear, let him hear!”
9
Yeshua said, “Behold, there went out a zore’a (sower) to sow zera (seed): he filled his hand and he cast. And it came to pass, as he sowed, some fell by the way side and the oph (birds) of the air came and devoured it up. Some fell on stony ground, and it had no root down to the adamah (earth) nor any ear up to Shamayim (heaven). And others fell among thorns; the thorns grew up, and choked it, and the worm ate it. And others fell on good adamah (ground), and did yield good peri (fruit) unto heaven, some shishim (sixty) and some me’ah ve’esrim (a hundred and twenty).”
10
Yeshua said, “I have set a fire upon the aretz (earth), and behold I guard it until it be kindled.”
11
Yeshua said, “This Shamayim (heaven) shall pass away, and that which is above it shall pass away; and they that are dead are not alive, and they that live shall not die. In the days when you were eating that which is dead, you were making it alive. When you come in the or (light), what will you do? On the day when you were echad (one), you became shnayim (two). But when you have become shnayim , what will you do?”
12
The talmidim (disciples) said unto Yeshua, “We know that you will go from us. Who is he that shall be great over us?” And Yeshua said unto them, “In the place to which you are come, you shall go to Ya’akov ha’Tzaddik (James the Just), for whose sake Shamayim and aretz came into being.”
13
Yeshua said unto his talmidim , “Make a comparison to me, and tell me whom I am like.” And Shimon Kefa (Simon Peter) said unto him, “You are like unto a mal’ach tzedek (righteous angel).” And Mattityahu (Matthew) said unto him, “You are like unto a chacham (wise man) of understanding.” And Tomas (Thomas) said unto him, “ Rabbi (Master), my mouth will in no wise suffer that I say whom you are like.” And Yeshua said unto him, “I am not your moreh (teacher), because you have drunk, and you have become drunk, from the bubbling spring which I have measured out.” And Yeshua took him and withdrew, and spoke unto him shalosh devarim (three words). And when Tomas came back unto his companions, they asked, and said unto him, “What did he say unto you?” And Tomas answered, and said unto them, “If I tell you but one of the devarim (words) that he spoke unto me, you will take up avanim (stones) and throw them at me; then shall an esh (fire) come forth from out of the stones and consume you.”
14
Yeshua said unto them, “If you fast, you will beget a chet (sin) for yourselves; and if you pray, you will be condemned; and if you give tzedakah (alms), you will do an evil to your spirits. If you go into any land and travel in its regions, and if they receive you, eat whatever they set before you, and heal the sick among them. For not that which goes into the mouth defiles you, but that which comes forth out of the mouth, that is what defiles you.”
15
Yeshua said, “When you see him who was not born of woman, throw yourselves down upon your face and worship him. He is your Abba (Father).”
16
Yeshua said, “Perhaps men think that I am come to cast shalom (peace) upon the world, and know not that I am come to cast divisions upon the aretz — esh (fire), cherev (sword), war. For there shall be chamishah (five) in a bayit (house); there shall be shalosh (three) against shnayim (two), and shnayim against shalosh , the av (father) against the ben (son), and the ben against the av ; and they shall stand alone.”
17
Yeshua said, “I shall grant unto you that which ayin (eye) has not seen, nor ozen (ear) heard, nor yad (hand) touched, nor which has entered into the lev (heart) of man.”
18
The talmidim said unto Yeshua , “Tell us how our end shall be.” Yeshua said, “Have you then discovered the beginning, that you seek after the end? For where the beginning is, there shall the end be. Blessed is he who shall stand in the beginning, and he shall know the end and shall not taste of mavet (death).”
19
Yeshua said, “Blessed is he who was before he came into being. Whosoever becomes my talmidim and hearkens unto my devarim (words), these avanim (stones) shall minister unto him. There are chamishah etzim (five trees) in Gan Eden (Paradise) which move not in summer or in winter, and the leaves thereof fall not. Him that knows these shall not taste of mavet (death).”
20
The talmidim said unto Yeshua , “Tell us what the Malchut ha’Shamayim (Kingdom of Heaven) is like.” And he said unto them, “It is like unto a grain of chardal (mustard-seed), smaller than all seeds; but when it falls upon the adamah (earth) which is tilled, it shoots out a great branch, and becomes a shelter for the oph ha’shamayim (birds of the air).”
21
Miryam (Mary) said unto Yeshua , “Whom are thy talmidim (disciples) like?” And he answered, and said, “They are like little yeladim (children) dwelling in a field which is not theirs. When the owners of the field come, they shall say, ‘Yield up to us our field.’ They are naked before them, to yield it up to them and to give them back their field. Therefore, I say unto you: If the ba’al ha’bayit (master of the house) knows that the ganav (thief) is coming, he will keep watch before he comes, and will not let him dig into his house of his malchut (kingdom) to carry off his vessels. You, then, be watchful over against the olam (world). Gird up your loins with great strength, that the shodedim (brigands) may not find a way to come at you, since the advantage for which you look they will find. May there be among you a man of binah (understanding)! And he said, ‘If a man should cast zera (seed) into the ground; and should sleep, and rise night and day, and the seed should spring and grow up, he knows not how. For the adamah (earth) brings forth fruit of herself; first the blade, then the ear, after that the full corn in the ear. But when the fruit is brought forth, immediately he puts in the sickle, because the harvest is come.’ He that has ears to hear, let him hear.”
22
Yeshua saw some infants at the breast. He said unto his talmidim , “These little ones at the breast are like those who enter into the malchut (kingdom).” They said unto him, “If we then be children, shall we enter the kingdom?” And Yeshua said unto them, “When you make the shnayim (two) echad (one), and when you make the inside as the outside, and the outside as the inside, and the upper side as the lower; and when you make the male and the female into echad (one), that the male be not male and the female be not female; when you make eyes in the place of an eye, and a hand in place of a hand, and a foot in place of a foot, an image in place of an image—then shall ye enter the malchut .”
23
Yeshua said, “I shall choose you, echad (one) out of a elef (thousand), and shnayim (two) out of revavah (ten thousand), and they shall stand as a single echad (one).”
24
The talmidim said unto Yeshua , “Teach us concerning the place where you are, for it is necessary for us to seek after it.” And he said unto them, “He that has ears, let him hear. There is an or (light) within a man of light, and it gives light to the whole olam (world). If it gives not light, there is choshech (darkness).”
25
Yeshua said, “Love your ach (brother) as your own nefesh (soul); keep him as the apple of your eye.”
26
Yeshua said, “You behold the mote that is in your brother's eye; but consider not the beam which is in your own eye. When you cast out the beam from your own eye, then shall you see to cast out the mote from your brother's eye.”
27
Yeshua said, “If you fast not from the olam (world), you will not find the malchut (kingdom); if you keep not the Shabbat (Sabbath) as Shabbat , you will not see the Abba (Father).”
28
Yeshua said, “I stood in the midst of the olam (world), and I appeared to them in basar (flesh). I found them all drunk, I found none among them thirsting; and my nefesh (soul) was afflicted for the bnei adam (sons of men), for they are blind in their heart and they do not see. For empty came they into the world, seeking also to depart empty from the world. But now they are drunk. When they have thrown off their wine, then will they repent.”
29
Yeshua said, “If the basar (flesh) has come into being because of the ruach (spirit), it is a marvel; but if the ruach has come into being because of the flesh, it is a marvel of marvels. But as for me, I marvel at this, how this great osher (wealth) has settled in this aniyut (poverty).”
30
Yeshua said, “Where there are shalosh (three), they are without Elohim (God); where there is but echad (one), I am with him.”
31
Yeshua said, “No navi (prophet) is accepted in his own kfar (village); a rofeh (physician) does not heal those who know him.”
32
Yeshua said, “A city that is built on a high har (mountain) and fortified cannot fall, nor can it remain hidden.”
33
Yeshua said, “What thou shalt hear in thine ozen (ear), proclaim to the other ear on your roof-tops. For no man lights a ner (lamp) and sets it under a bushel, nor does he put it in a hidden place; but he sets it upon the menorah (lampstand), that all who go in and come out may see its or (light).”
34
Yeshua said, “If a blind man leads a blind man, both shall fall into a bor (pit).”
35
Yeshua said, “No man can enter into a strong man's house and take it by force, except he first bind his hands; then he will plunder his house.”
36
Yeshua said, “Take no thought from morning to evening, nor from evening to morning, for your raiment, what ye shall put on. And ye, when ye have no raiment, what shall ye put on? Who can add to your stature? The same shall give you your raiment.”
37
His talmidim (disciples) said, “On what yom (day) wilt thou be revealed to us, and on what day shall we see thee?” And Yeshua said, “When you unclothe yourselves and are not ashamed, and take your garments and lay them beneath your feet like little yeladim (children), and tread upon them—then shall ye see the Bar (Son) of Him that liveth, and ye shall not fear.”
38
Yeshua said, “Many times have you desired to hear these devarim (words) which I speak unto you, and you have none other from whom to hear them. Days will come when ye shall seek after me, and ye shall find me not.”
39
Yeshua said, “The Perushim (Pharisees) and the Soferim (Scribes) have received the keys of da’at (knowledge); and they have hidden them. They did not enter in, and them that wish to enter in they suffer not. And you, be ye as wise as nachashim (serpents) and as innocent as yonim (doves).”
40
Yeshua said, “A gefen (vine) was planted apart from the Abba (Father), and since it is not established it shall be pulled up by its roots and destroyed.”
41
Yeshua said, “Him that hath in his yad (hand), to him yoter (more) shall be given; and him that hath not, from him shall be taken even the me’at (little) he hath.”
42
Yeshua said, “Become orchim (visitors).”
43
His talmidim (disciples) said unto him: “Who art thou, that thou shouldst say these things to us?” And Yeshua said unto them, “From what I say unto you, ye understand not that I am. Have ye become as the Yehudim (Jews); for they do love the etz (tree) and hate the pri (fruit) thereof, or they do love the pri but hate the etz .”
44
Yeshua said, “He that shall blaspheme against the Abba (Father), he shall be forgiven; and he that shall blaspheme against the Ben (Son), also shall he be forgiven. But he that shall blaspheme against the Ruach ha’Kodesh (Holy Spirit) shall never be forgiven, neither on the aretz (earth) nor in Shamayim (heaven).”
45
Yeshua said, “They do not gather anavim (grapes) from thorns, nor pluck te’enim (figs) from thistles; they do not yield pri (fruit). A tzaddik (righteous man) bringeth forth that which is tov (good) from his otzar (treasure); a rasha (bad man) bringeth forth that which is ra (evil) from his evil treasure. The same is in his lev (heart), and he saith evil things; for out of the abundance of his lev he bringeth forth evil.”
46
Yeshua said, “From Adam unto Yochanan ha’Matbil (John the Baptist), none born of ishah (woman) is greater than Yochanan , that his eyes shall not be humbled. But I have said, He among you who shall become as a yeled (child) shall know the Malchut (kingdom); the same shall be greater than Yochanan .”
47
Yeshua said, “No man can ride two susim (horses), nor draw two keshatot (bows). No eved (servant) can serve two adonim (masters); or he will honour the one and insult the other. No man having drunk old yayin (wine) straightway desireth new yayin . And new yayin is not poured into old skins, lest they burst, nor is old yayin poured into new skins, lest it spoil. An old patch is not sewn into a new garment, for a rent will come.”
48
Yeshua said, “If shnayim (two) make shalom (peace) with one another in this house, they shall say to the har (mountain), ‘Be thou moved.’ And it shall be moved.”
49
Yeshua said, “Blessed are the yechidim (solitary) and the bechirim (elect), for you shall find the Malchut (kingdom); for you came forth thence, and shall go there again.”
50
Yeshua said, “If they say unto you, ‘Whence have you come?’ say unto them, ‘We have come from the Or (light), the place where the Or came into being through itself alone. It stood, and it revealed itself in their tzelem (image).’ If they say unto you, ‘Who are you?’ say unto them, ‘We are his banim (sons), and we are the bechirim (elect) of the Av (Father) that liveth.’ If they ask you, ‘What is the ot (sign) of your Father in you?’ tell them, ‘It is a tenu’ah u’menuchah (a motion and a repose).’”
51
His talmidim (disciples) said unto him, “On what yom (day) will the menuchah (rest) of the metim (dead) come into being? And on what yom will the olam ha’chadash (new world) come?” And he said unto them, “That which ye await hath already come, but ye know it not.”
52
His talmidim (disciples) said unto him, “ Esrim ve’arba nevi’im (Twenty-four prophets) spoke in Yisrael (Israel), and they all spoke in thee.” He said unto them, “Ye have neglected him that is alive before you, and have spoken of the dead.”
53
His talmidim (disciples) asked, and said unto Yeshua , “Doth milah (circumcision) profit us, or doth it not profit us?” And He, answering, said unto them, “Did it profit ye, the Abba (Father) would beget all from their mother circumcised. But the true milah in ruach (spirit) hath been proven to profit ye.”
54
Yeshua said, “Blessed are the aniyim (poor), for yours is the Malchut ha’Shamayim (Kingdom of Heaven).”
55
Yeshua said, “He who shall not hate his av (father) and his em (mother) cannot be my talmid (disciple), and he who does not hate his achim (brethren) and his achayot (sisters) and take up his tzelav (cross) like me shall not be worthy of me.”
56
Yeshua said, “He that hath known the olam (world) hath found a corpse, and he that hath found a corpse, of him the world is not worthy.”
57
Yeshua said, “The Malchut of the Abba (Father) is like unto a man who had good zera (seed). His oyev (enemy) came by night, and sowed a weed among the good seed. The man did not allow them to pull up the weed. He said unto them, ‘Lest perhaps you go to pull up the weed, and pull up the chittah (wheat) with it. For on the yom ha’katzir (day of harvest) the weeds will be manifest; they will be pulled up and burned.’”
58
Yeshua said, “Blessed is the man that hath suffered; the same hath found chayyim (life).”
59
Yeshua said, “Look ye upon the One that liveth for so long as ye shall live, that ye may not die and seek to see Him, and be unable to see.”
60
They saw a Shomroni (Samaritan) carrying a seh (lamb) going into Yehudah (Judaea). And he said unto his talmidim , “Wherefore doth he carry the lamb?” And they said unto him, “That he may slay it and eat thereof.” And he said unto them, “So long as it is alive he shall not eat it, but if he slay it and it becometh a corpse.” And they said, “Otherwise, he shall be unable to do it.” He said unto them, “Ye also, seek for yourselves a place within for menuchah (rest), lest ye become a corpse and be eaten.”
61
Yeshua said, “Two shall rest upon a mittah (bed); one shall die, the other shall live.” Shlomit (Salomé) said, “Who art thou, O man? And whose ben (son) art thou? Thou hast mounted my bed, and eaten from my shulchan (table).” Yeshua said unto her, “I am he who is from that which is shalem (whole); to me was given of the things of my Abba (Father).” And Shlomit said, “I am thy talmidah (disciple).” And Yeshua said unto her, “Therefore I say, when it is shalem it will be filled with or (light), but when it is divided it will be filled with choshech (darkness).”
62
Yeshua said, “It is to them that are worthy of my sodot (mysteries) that I tell my mysteries. What thy right hand shall do, let not thy smol (left hand) know.”
63
Yeshua said, “There was a rich man which had an abundance of nechasim (possessions). And he said, ‘I shall make use of my possessions that I may sow and reap and plant, and fill my asamim (barns) with peri (fruit), that I may have need of nothing.’ These were his thoughts in his lev (heart). And in that night he died. He that hath oznayim (ears), let him hear.”
64
Yeshua said, “A man had guests, and when he had prepared the seudah (dinner) he sent his eved (servant) to summon the guests. He came to the first; he said unto him, ‘My adon (master) summons thee.’ He said, ‘I have kesef (money) with some socharim (merchants). They are coming to me in the erev (evening). I will go and give them orders. I pray to be excused from the dinner.’ He went to another; he said unto him, ‘My adon hath summoned thee.’ He said unto him: ‘I have bought a bayit (house), and they ask me for a yom (day). I shall not have time.’ He came to another; he said to him, ‘My master summons thee.’ He said unto him: ‘My chaver (friend) is about to be married, and I am to hold a dinner. I shall not be able to come. I pray to be excused from the dinner.’ He went to another; he said unto him, ‘My master summons thee.’ He said unto him, ‘I have bought a kfar (village); I go to collect the sechar (rent). I shall not be able to come. I pray to be excused.’ The servant came, and said unto his master, ‘Those whom thou didst summon to the dinner have excused themselves.’ And the master said unto his servant, ‘Go out to the derachim (roads). Bring those whom thou shalt find, that they may dine. The konim (buyers) and the merchants shall not enter the places of my Abba (Father).’”
65
He said, “A good man had a kerem (vineyard). He gave it to kormim (husbandmen) that they might work it, and he receive its fruit from their hand. He sent his servant, that the husbandmen might give him the fruit of the vineyard. They seized his servant, they beat him, and all but killed him. The servant came, and told his master. His master said, ‘Perhaps they did not know him.’ He sent another servant; the husbandmen beat the other also. Then the master sent his ben (son). He said, ‘Perhaps they will reverence my son.’ Those husbandmen, since they knew that he was the yoresh (heir) of the vineyard, they seized him and killed him. He that hath ears, let him hear.”
66
Yeshua said, “Teach me concerning this even (stone) which the bonim (builders) rejected; it is the even pinnah (corner-stone).”
67
Yeshua said, “He who knoweth ha’kol (the All) but fails to know himself lacks ha’kol (everything).”
68
Yeshua said, “Blessed are you when they hate you, and ridfah (persecute) you, and do not find a place in the spot where they persecuted you.”
69
Yeshua said, “Blessed are they who have been nirdafim (persecuted) in their heart; these are they who have known the Abba (Father) in emet (truth). Blessed are they that hunger, for the beten (belly) of him that desires shall be filled.”

76
Yeshua said, “The Malchut (kingdom) of the Abba (Father) is like unto a socher (merchant) who had a load of goods and found a peninah (pearl). That merchant was wise; he sold the load, and bought for himself the pearl alone. You also, seek after his otzar (treasure) which does not perish but endures, where moth does not enter to devour, nor does worm destroy.”
77
Yeshua said, “I am the Or (light) that is over them all. I am ha’kol (the all); ha’kol hath come forth from me, and ha’kol hath attained unto me. Cleave a piece of etz (wood); I am there. Raise up the even (stone), and ye shall find me there.”
78
Yeshua said, “Why came ye forth into the sadeh (field)? To see a kaneh (reed) shaken by the ruach (wind)? And to see an ish (man) clothed in soft begadim (raiment)? Behold, your melachim (kings) and your gedolim (great men) are they who are clothed in soft begadim , and they shall not be able to know ha’emet (the truth).”
79
An ishah (woman) in the crowd said unto him, “Blessed is the beten (womb) which bore thee, and the shadayim (breasts) which nourished thee.” And he said unto her, “Blessed are they who have heard the davar (word) of the Abba (Father) and have kept it in emet (truth). For there shall be yamim (days) when you will say, ‘Blessed is that beten which hath not conceived, and those shadayim which have not given suck.’”

91
They said unto him, “Tell us who thou art, that we may believe in thee.” He said unto them, “You test the face of Shamayim (Heaven) and the aretz (Earth), and him that is before you, you know not, and you know not how to test this sha’ah (moment).”

When she came into her bayit (house), she put down the jar and did find it empty.”

99
