Sefer Adam v'Chavah I (First Book of Adam and Eve)

Introduction

Introduction to Sefer Adam V'Chawah

Sefer Adam V'Chawah (The First Book of Adam and Eve), presented within the framework of the Ivrit Heritage Bible, is a profound narrative that bridges the lost reality of Gan Eden (the Garden of Eden) with the earliest generations of humanity. Unlike later Westernized retellings, this translation restores original Hebrew concepts, offering a vivid account of exile, spiritual struggle, and covenantal hope.

Core Themes

• Exile and Geography: The text maps the boundaries of the post-fall world — the Crystal Sea, the southern winds, and the Me'arat HaOtzrot (Cave of Treasures) — showing how physical landscapes mirror spiritual realities. • Worship and Covenant: Adam and Chawah's grief leads to the first mizbe'ach (altar) and sacrificial offerings, establishing a liturgical rhythm that foreshadows Shabbat and Messianic redemption. • Messianic Typology: Prophetic tokens such as gold, incense, and myrrh, the covering of skins, and the 5,500-year covenant point directly to the coming of the Mashiach (Messiah). • Spiritual Warfare: Satan ha-Mastemah's deceptive strategies — false light, seduction, violence, and environmental traps — highlight the ongoing battle between despair and faith. • Fracture of Shalom: The murder of Hevel (Abel) by Qayin (Cain) marks the first rupture in human society, underscoring the consequences of yielding to the adversary's counsel.

Significance

This text is not merely a retelling of Eden's aftermath; it is a prophetic drama. Every trial faced by Adam and Chawah is met with divine intervention, embedding remezim (hints) of redemption and covenant. It portrays humanity's fall into mortality and struggle, yet continually points to the Go'el (Redeemer) who will restore shalom and cover transgression.

Key Takeaway: Sefer Adam V'Chawah is both a historical-spiritual narrative and a messianic prophecy. It lays the foundation for understanding exile, worship, and redemption, showing how the first family's journey foreshadows the ultimate salvation through the Word made flesh.

Chapter 1 The Crystal Sea and the Cave of Treasures

1 On the third day, אֱלֹהִים (Elohim) planted the גַּן Gan (Garden) in the east of הָאָרֶץ [the earth], on the border of the world eastward, beyond which, towards the sun-rising, one finds nothing but mayim (water) that encompasses the whole world, and reaches unto the borders of the שָׁמַיִם (Shamayim, heavens).
2 And to the north of the Gan there is a sea of mayim, clear and pure to the taste, like unto nothing else; so that, through the clearness thereof, one may look into the depths of הָאֲדָמָה ha’adamah (the ground).
3 And when a man washes himself in it, he becomes clean with the cleanness thereof, and white with its whiteness—even if he were dark.
4 And Elohim created that sea of His own good pleasure, for He knew what would come of the man He should make; so that after he had left the Gan, on account of his transgression, men should be born in the earth. From among them, צַדִּיקִים (Tzaddikim, righteous ones) should die, whose souls Elohim would raise at the last day; when they should return to their בָּשָׂר (Basar flesh), they should bathe in the mayim of that sea, and all of them repent of their חֵטְא (Chet, sins).
5 But when Elohim made אָדָם Adam go out of the Gan , He did not place him on the border of it northward, lest he should draw near to the sea of מַיִם (Mayim), and he and חַוָּה (Chawah, Eve) wash themselves in it, be cleansed from their sins, forget the transgression they had committed, and be no longer reminded of it in the thought of their punishment.
6 Then, again, as to the southern side of the Gan, Elohim was not pleased to let Adam dwell there; because, when the wind blew from the north, it would bring him, on that southern side, the delicious smell of the trees of the Gan .
7 Wherefore Elohim did not put Adam there, lest he should smell the sweet smell of those trees, forget his transgression, and find consolation for what he had done, take delight in the smell of the trees, and not be cleansed from his transgression.
8 Again, also, because Elohim is merciful and of great pity, and governs all things in a way He alone knows—He made our father Adam dwell in the western border of the Gan, because on that side the earth is very broad.
9 And Elohim commanded him to dwell there in a cave in a rock— מְעָרַת הָאוֹצָרוֹת the Me‘arat Ha’Otzrot (Cave of Treasures) below the Gan.

Chapter 2 Adam and Chawah Faint, and the Davar of Elohim Upholds Them

1 But when our father Adam and Chawah went out of the Gan (Garden), they trod the ground on their feet, not knowing they were treading.
2 And when they came to the opening of the שַׁעַר sha‘ar (gate) of the Gan, and saw the broad earth spread before them, covered with stones large and small, and with sand, they feared and trembled, and fell on their faces, from the fear that came upon them; and they were as dead.
3 Because—whereas they had hitherto been in the garden-land, beautifully planted with all manner of trees—they now saw themselves in a strange land, which they knew not, and had never seen.
4 And because at that time they were filled with the חֶסֶד (Chesed grace) of a bright nature, and they had not hearts turned towards earthly things.
5 Therefore had Elohim pity on them; and when He saw them fallen before the gate of the Gan, He sent His דָּבָר (Davar Word/Thing) unto father Adam and Chawah, and raised them from their fallen state.

Chapter 3 Concerning the Promise of the Great Five Days and a Half

1 Elohim said to Adam , “I have ordained on this earth yamim (days) and shanim (years), and you and your zera (seed) shall dwell and walk in it, until the yamim and the shanim are fulfilled; when I shall send the Davar (Word) that created you, and against which you have transgressed—the Davar that made you come out of the Gan (Garden) and that raised you when you were fallen.
2 Yea, the Davar that will again save you when the five days and a half are fulfilled.”
3 But when Adam heard these devarim (words) from Elohim, and of the great five days and a half, he did not understand the meaning of them.
4 For Adam was thinking that there would be but five days and a half for him, to the end of the world.
5 And Adam wept and prayed to Elohim to explain it to him.
6 Then Elohim, in His rachamim (mercy) for Adam, who was made after His own tzelem (image) and demut (likeness), explained to him that these were five thousand and five hundred shanim (years); and how One would then come and save him and his zera (seed).
7 But Elohim had before that made this beriyt (covenant) with our father Adam in the same terms, before he came out of the Gan (Garden), when he was by the etz (tree) whereof Chawah (Eve) took the fruit and gave it to him to eat.
8 Inasmuch as when our father Adam came out of the Gan, he passed by that etz, and saw how Elohim had then changed the appearance of it into another form, and how it withered.
9 And as Adam went to it, he feared, trembled, and fell down; but Elohim, in His mercy, lifted him up, and then made this beriyt with him.
10 And, again, when Adam was by the sha‘ar (gate) of the Gan, and saw the keruv (cherub) with a cherev (sword) of flashing esh (fire) in his hand, and the keruv grew angry and frowned at him, both Adam and Chawah became afraid of him, and thought he meant to put them to death. So they fell on their faces and trembled with fear.
11 But he had pity on them, and showed them mercy; and turning from them, went up to shamayim (heaven), and prayed unto Yahuah, and said:
12 “Adonai, You sent me to watch at the sha‘ar of the Gan , with a cherev of esh .
13 “But when Your avadim (servants), Adam and Chawah, saw me, they fell on their faces and were as dead. O my Adonai, what shall we do to Your avadim?”
14 Then Elohim had pity on them, showed them mercy, and sent His Malach (Angel) to keep the Gan.
15 And the Davar Yahuah (Word of the Lord) came unto Adam and Chawah and raised them up.
16 And Yahuah said to Adam: “I told you that at the end of the five days and a half, I will send My Davar and save you.
17 “Strengthen your lev (heart), therefore, and abide in the Me‘arat Ha’Otzrot (Cave of Treasures), of which I have before spoken to you.”
18 And when Adam heard this Davar from Elohim, he was comforted with that which Elohim had told him. For He had told him how He would save him.

Chapter 4 Adam Laments the Changed Conditions; They Enter the Cave of Treasures

1 But Adam and Chawah (Eve) wept for having come out of the Gan (Garden), their first abode.
2 And, indeed, when Adam looked at his basar (flesh), that was altered, he wept bitterly, he and Chawah, over what they had done. And they walked and went gently down into the Me‘arat Ha’Otzrot (Cave of Treasures).
3 And as they came to it, Adam wept over himself and said to Chawah, “Look at this cave that is to be our prison in this world, and a place of punishment!
4 “What is it compared with the Gan? What is its narrowness compared with the space of the other?
5 “What is this rock, by the side of those groves? What is the gloom of this cavern, compared with the or (light) of the Gan?
6 “What is this overhanging ledge of rock to shelter us, compared with the rachamim (mercy) of Yahuah that overshadowed us?
7 “What is the soil of this cave compared with the garden land? This earth, strewed with stones; and that, planted with delicious fruit trees!”
8 And Adam said to Chawah, “Look at your eyes, and at mine, which before beheld malachim (angels) in shamayim (heaven) praising; and they, too, without ceasing.
9 “But now we do not see as we did: our eyes have become of basar; they cannot see in like manner as they saw before.”
10 Adam said again to Chawah, “What is our body today, compared to what it was in former days when we dwelt in the Gan?”
11 After this, Adam did not like to enter the cave, under the overhanging rock; nor would he ever have entered it.
12 But he bowed to Elohim ’s orders; and said to himself, “Unless I enter the cave, I shall again be a transgressor.”

Chapter 5 Wherein Chawah Makes a Noble Intercession, Taking the Blame Upon Herself

1 Then Adam and Chawah entered the cave, and stood praying, in their own lashon (tongue), unknown to us, but which they knew well.
2 And as they prayed, Adam raised his eyes, and saw the rock and the roof of the cave that covered him overhead, so that he could see neither shamayim (heaven), nor the ma‘aseh (creatures/works) of Elohim . So he wept and smote heavily upon his chest, until he dropped, and was as dead.
3 And Chawah sat weeping; for she believed he was dead.
4 Then she arose, spread her hands towards Elohim, beseeching Him for rachamim (mercy) and pity, and said: “O Elohim, forgive me my chata’ah (sin), the sin which I committed, and remember it not against me.
5 “For I alone caused Your eved (servant) to fall from the Gan (Garden) into this lost estate; from or (light) into this choshech (darkness); and from the abode of joy into this prison.
6 “O Elohim, look upon this Your avdecha (Your servant) thus fallen, and raise him from his death, that he may weep and repent of his transgression which he committed through me.
7 “Take not away his nefesh (soul) this once; but let him live, that he may stand after the measure of his repentance, and do Your ratzon (will), as before his death.
8 “But if You do not raise him up, then, O Elohim, take away my own nefesh, that I be like him; and leave me not in this dungeon, one and alone; for I could not stand alone in this world, but with him only.
9 “For You, O Elohim, caused a slumber to come upon him, and took an etzem (bone) from his side, and restored the basar (flesh) in the place of it, by Your divine power.
10 “And You took me, the etzem, and made me a woman, bright like him, with lev (heart), binah (understanding), and dibbur (speech); and in basar , like unto his own; and You made me after the demut (likeness) of his countenance, by Your mercy and power.
11 “O Yahuah, I and he are echad (one); and You, O Elohim, are our Creator. You are He who made us both in one yom (day).
12 “Therefore, O Elohim, give him life, that he may be with me in this strange land, while we dwell in it on account of our pesha (transgression).
13 “But if You will not give him life, then take me, even me, like him; that we both may die the same yom .”
14 And Chawah wept bitterly, and fell upon our father Adam, from her great sorrow.

Chapter 6 Elohim's Admonition to Adam and Chawah, Showing How and Why They Sinned

1 But Elohim looked upon them; for they had killed themselves through great yagon (grief).
2 But He would raise them and comfort them.
3 He, therefore, sent His Davar (Word) unto them; that they should stand and be raised forthwith.
4 And Yahuah said unto Adam and Chawah (Eve), "You transgressed of your own free will, until you came out of the Gan (Garden) in which I had placed you.
5 "Of your own free will have you transgressed through your desire for divinity, greatness, and an exalted state, such as I have; so that I deprived you of the bright nature in which you then were, and I made you come out of the Gan to this land, rough and full of trouble.
6 "If only you had not transgressed My mitzvah (commandment) and had kept My Torah (teachings and instructions), and had not eaten of the fruit of the etz (tree) near which I told you not to come! And there were fruit trees in the Gan better than that one.
7 "But the wicked Satan who continued not in his first estate, nor kept his emunah (faith); in whom was no good intent towards Me, and who, though I had created him, yet set Me at naught, and sought the Godhead, so that I hurled him down from shamayim (heaven)—he it is who made the etz appear pleasant in your eyes, until you ate of it, by hearkening to him.
8 "Thus have you transgressed My mitzvah, and therefore have I brought upon you all these tzarot (sorrows).
9 "For I am Elohim the Creator, who, when I created My creatures, did not intend to destroy them. But after they had sorely roused My anger, I punished them with grievous plagues, until they make teshuvah (repent).
10 "But if, on the contrary, they still continue hardened in their pesha (transgression), they shall be under a kelalah (curse) forever."

Chapter 7 The Beasts are Reconciled to Adam

1 When Adam and Chawah (Eve) heard these devarim (words) from Elohim, they wept and sobbed yet more; but they strengthened their hearts in Elohim, because they now felt that Yahuah was to them like an av (father) and an em (mother). And for this very reason, they wept before Him, and sought rachamim (mercy) from Him.
2 Then Elohim had pity on them, and said: "O Adam, I have made My berit (covenant) with you, and I will not turn from it; neither will I let you return to the Gan (Garden) until My berit of the great five days and a half is fulfilled."
3 Then Adam said unto Elohim: "O Yahuah, You created us, and made us fit to be in the Gan; and before I transgressed, You made all chayot (beasts) come to me, that I should name them.
4 "Your chesed (grace) was then on me, and I named every one according to Your mind; and You made them all subject unto me.
5 "But now, O Yahuah Elohim, that I have transgressed Your mitzvah (commandment), all beasts will rise against me and will devour me, and Chawah Your amah (handmaid), and will cut off our lives from the face of the earth.
6 "I therefore beseech You, O Elohim, that, since You have made us come out of the Gan, and have made us be in a strange land, You will not let the beasts hurt us."
7 When Yahuah heard these devarim from Adam, He had pity on him and felt that he had truly said that the beasts of the field would rise and devour him and Chawah, because He, Yahuah, was angry with the two of them on account of their pesha (transgression).
8 Then Elohim commanded the chayot (beasts), and the of (birds), and all that moves upon the earth, to come to Adam and to be familiar with him, and not to trouble him and Chawah; nor yet any of the good and tzaddikim (righteous ones) among their posterity.
9 Then the beasts did obeisance to Adam, according to the mitzvah (commandment) of Elohim —except the nachash (serpent), against which Elohim was worth. It did not come to Adam with the beasts.

Chapter 8 The Bright Nature of Man is Taken Away

1 Then Adam wept and said, "O Elohim, when we dwelt in the Gan (Garden), and our hearts were lifted up, we saw the malachim (angels) that sang praises in shamayim (heaven); but now we do not see as we were used to do. Nay, when we entered the cave, all creation became hidden from us."
2 Then Yahuah Elohim said unto Adam, "When you were under subjection to Me, you had a bright nature within you, and for that reason you could see things afar off. But after your pesha (transgression), your bright nature was withdrawn from you; and it was not left to you to see things afar off, but only near at hand—after the ability of the basar (flesh), for it is brutish."
3 When Adam and Chawah (Eve) had heard these devarim (words) from Elohim, they went their way, praising and worshipping Him with a sorrowful lev (heart).
4 And Elohim ceased to commune with them.

Chapter 9 Water from the Tree of Life; Adam and Chawah Near Drowning

1 Then Adam and Chawah (Eve) came out of the Me‘arat Ha’Otzrot (Cave of Treasures) and drew near to the sha‘ar (gate) of the Gan (Garden), and there they stood to look at it and wept for having come away from it.
2 And Adam and Chawah went from before the sha‘ar of the Gan to the southern side of it, and found there the mayim (water) that watered the Gan , from the root of the Etz HaChayim (Tree of Life), and that parted itself from there into four rivers over the earth.
3 Then they came and drew near to that mayim, and looked at it, and saw that it was the mayim that came forth from under the root of the Etz HaChayim in the Gan.
4 And Adam wept and wailed, and smote upon his chest, for being severed from the Gan, and said to Chawah:
5 “Why have you brought upon me, upon yourself, and upon our zera (seed), so many of these plagues and punishments?”
6 And Chawah said unto him, “What is it you have seen, to weep and to speak to me in this wise?”
7 And he said to Chawah, “Do you not see this mayim that was with us in the Gan, that watered the trees of the Gan, and flowed out from there?
8 “And we, when we were in the Gan, did not care about it; but since we came to this strange land, we love it, and turn it to use for our basar (body).”
9 But when Chawah heard these devarim (words) from him, she wept; and from the soreness of their weeping, they fell into that mayim; and would have put an end to themselves in it, so as never again to return and behold the creation; for when they looked upon the work of creation, they felt they must put an end to themselves.

Chapter 10 Their Bodies Need Water After They Leave the Garden

1 Then Elohim, merciful and gracious, looked upon them thus lying in the mayim (water), and near unto death, and sent a malach (angel), who brought them out of the mayim and laid them on the seashore as dead.
2 Then the malach went up to Elohim, was welcomed, and said, "O Elohim, Your creatures have breathed their last."
3 Then Elohim sent His Davar (Word) unto Adam and Chawah (Eve), who raised them from their death.
4 And Adam said, after he was raised, "O Elohim, while we were in the Gan (Garden) we did not require, or care for this mayim; but since we came to this land we cannot do without it."
5 Then Elohim said to Adam, "While you were under My mitzvah (command) and were a bright being, you knew not this mayim.
6 "But after you transgressed My mitzvah, you cannot do without mayim, in which to wash your basar (body) and make it grow; for it is now like that of beasts, and is in want of mayim."
7 When Adam and Chawah heard these devarim (words) from Elohim, they wept a bitter cry; and Adam entreated Elohim to let him return into the Gan, and look at it a second time.
8 But Elohim said unto Adam, "I have made you a havtachah (promise); when that havtachah is fulfilled, I will bring you back into the Gan —you and your zera tzaddikim (righteous seed)."
9 And Elohim ceased to commune with Adam.

Chapter 11 A Recollection of the Glorious Days in the Garden

1 Then Adam and Chawah (Eve) felt themselves burning with thirst, heat, and sorrow.
2 And Adam said to Chawah, "We shall not drink of this mayim (water), even if we were to die. O Chawah, when this mayim comes into our inner parts, it will increase our punishments and that of our children that shall come after us."
3 Both Adam and Chawah then withdrew from the mayim and drank none of it at all, but came and entered the Me'arat Ha'Otzrot (Cave of Treasures).
4 But when in it, Adam could not see Chawah; he only heard the noise she made. Neither could she see Adam, but heard the noise he made.
5 Then Adam wept, in deep affliction, and smote upon his breast; and he arose and said to Chawah, "Where are you?"
6 And she said unto him, "Lo, I am standing in this choshech (darkness)."
7 He then said to her, "Remember the bright nature in which we lived, while we abode in the Gan (Garden)!
8 "O Chawah! Remember the kavod (glory) that rested on us in the Gan. O Chawah! Remember the trees that overshadowed us in the Gan while we moved among them.
9 "O Chawah! Remember that while we were in the Gan, we knew neither lailah (night) nor yom (day). Think of the Etz HaChayim (Tree of Life), from below which flowed the mayim, and that shed noga (lustre) over us! Remember, O Chawah, the garden land, and the brightness thereof!
10 "Think, oh, think of that Gan in which was no choshech, while we dwelt therein.
11 "Whereas no sooner did we come into this Me'arat Ha'Otzrot than choshech compassed us round about; until we can no longer see each other; and all the pleasure of this life has come to an end."

Chapter 12 How Darkness Came Between Adam and Chawah

1 Then Adam smote upon his chest, he and Chawah (Eve), and they mourned the whole night until shachar (dawn) drew near, and they sighed over the length of the night in Miyazia .
2 And Adam beat himself, and threw himself on the ground in the me'arah (cave), from bitter grief, and because of the choshech (darkness), and lay there as dead.
3 But Chawah heard the noise he made in falling upon the earth. And she felt about for him with her hands, and found him like a corpse.
4 Then she was afraid, speechless, and remained by him.
5 But the merciful Yahuah looked on the death of Adam, and on Chawah's silence from fear of the choshech.
6 And the Davar Elohim (Word of God) came unto Adam and raised him from his death, and opened Chawah's mouth that she might speak.
7 Then Adam arose in the me'arah and said, "O Elohim, why has or (light) departed from us, and choshech come over us? Why do You leave us in this long choshech? Why will You plague us thus?
8 "And this choshech, O Yahuah, where was it before it came upon us? It is such that we cannot see each other.
9 "For, so long as we were in the Gan (Garden), we neither saw nor even knew what choshech is. I was not hidden from Chawah, neither was she hidden from me, until now that she cannot see me; and no choshech came upon us, to separate us from each other.
10 "But she and I were both in one bright or. I saw her, and she saw me. Yet now since we came into this me'arah, choshech has come upon us, and parted us asunder, so that I do not see her, and she does not see me.
11 "O Yahuah, will You then plague us with this choshech?"

Chapter 13 The Fall of Adam; Why Night and Day Were Created

1 Then when Elohim, who is merciful and full of pity, heard Adam's voice, He said unto him: —
2 "O Adam, so long as the good malach (angel) was obedient to Me, a bright "Or" (light) rested on him and on his hosts.
3 "But when he transgressed My mitzvah (commandment), I deprived him of that bright nature, and he became dark.
4 "And when he was in the shamayim (heavens), in the realms of or, he knew nothing of choshech (darkness).
5 "But he transgressed, and I made him fall from shamayim upon the earth; and it was this choshech that came upon him.
6 "And on you, O Adam, while in My Gan (Garden) and obedient to Me, did that bright "Or"[light] rest also.
7 "But when I heard of your transgression, I deprived you of that bright Or. Yet, of My mercy, I did not turn you into choshech, but I made your body of basar (flesh), over which I spread this Or skin, in order that it may bear cold and heat.
8 "If I had let My wrath fall heavily upon you, I should have destroyed you; and had I turned you into choshech, it would have been as if I had killed you.
9 "But in My mercy, I have made you as you are; when you transgressed My mitzvah , O Adam , I drove you from the Gan , and made you come forth into this land; and commanded you to dwell in this me'arah (cave); and choshech came upon you, as it did upon him who transgressed My mitzvah .
10 "Thus, O Adam, has this lailah (night) deceived you. It is not to last forever, but is only of twelve hours; when it is over, yom (daylight) will return.
11 "Sigh not, therefore, neither be moved; and say not in your lev (heart) that this choshech is long and drags on wearily; and say not in your lev that I plague you with it.
12 "Strengthen your lev, and be not afraid. This choshech is not a punishment. But, O Adam, I have made the yom, and have placed the shemesh (sun) in it to give Or [light]; in order that you and your children should do your work.
13 "For I knew you would sin and transgress, and come out into this land. Yet would I not force you, nor be hard upon you, nor shut you up; nor doom you through your fall; nor through your coming out from or into choshech; nor yet through your coming from the Gan into this land.
14 "For I made you of the Or[light]; and I willed to bring out children of Or from you and like unto you.
15 "But you did not keep My mitzvah for one day; until I had finished the creation and blessed everything in it.
16 "Then I commanded you concerning the etz (tree), that you eat not thereof. Yet I knew that Satan, who deceived himself, would also deceive you.
17 "So I made known to you by means of the etz [tree], not to come near him. And I told you not to eat of the fruit thereof, nor to taste of it, nor yet to sit under it, nor to yield to it.
18 "Had I not been and spoken to you, O Adam, concerning the etz[tree], and had I left you without a mitzvah, and you had sinned—it would have been an offence on My part, for not having given you any order; you would turn around and blame Me for it.
19 "But I commanded you, and warned you, and you did fall. So that My creatures cannot blame Me, but the blame rests on them alone.
20 "And, O Adam, I have made the yom for you and for your children after you, for them to work and toil therein. And I have made the lailah for them to rest in it from their work; and for the chayot (beasts) of the field to go forth by night and seek their food.
21 "But little of choshech now remains, O Adam; and yom will soon appear."

Chapter 14 The Earliest Prophecy of the Coming of the Mashiach

1 Then Adam said unto Elohim, "O Yahuah, take my nefesh (soul), and let me not see this gloom anymore; or remove me to some place where there is no choshech (darkness)."
2 But Yahuah Elohim said to Adam , "Verily I say unto you, this choshech will pass from you, every yom (day) I have determined for you, until the fulfillment of My beriyt (covenant); when I will save you and bring you back again into the Gan (Garden), into the abode of “Or [light] you long for, wherein is no choshech . I will bring you to it—in the Malkut HaShamayim (Kingdom of Heaven, also see Gospel of Nicodemus)."
3 Again said Elohim unto Adam, "All this misery that you have been made to take upon yourself because of your pesha (transgression), will not free you from the hand of Satan, and will not save you.
4 "But I will. When I shall come down from shamayim (heaven), and shall become basar (flesh) of your zera (seed), and take upon Me the infirmity from which you suffer, then the choshech that came upon you in this me'arah (cave) shall come upon Me in the kever (grave) when I am in the basar of your zera [seed].
5 "And I, who am without years, shall be subject to the reckoning of years, of times, of months, and of yamim (days), and I shall be reckoned as one of the sons of men, in order to save you."(Gospel of Nicodemus chapter 19-22)
6 And Elohim ceased to commune with Adam.

Chapter 15 Adam and Chawah Weep and Sorrow by Reason of Elohim's Words

1 Then Adam and Chawah (Eve) wept and sorrowed greatly by reason of Elohim's devarim (words) to them, that they should not return to the Gan (Garden) until the fulfillment of the yamim (days) decreed upon them; but mostly because Elohim had told them that He should suffer for their yeshuah (salvation). (Gospels: Matthew, Mark, Luke, John and Nicodemus)

Chapter 16 The First Sunrise; Adam and Chawah Think it is a Fire Coming to Burn Them

1 After this, Adam and Chawah (Eve) ceased not to stand in the me'arah (cave), praying and weeping, until the boker (morning) dawned upon them.
2 And when they saw the or (light) returned to them, they restrained themselves from fear, and strengthened their hearts.
3 Then Adam began to come out of the me'arah. And when he came to the mouth of it, and stood and turned his face towards the east, and saw the shemesh (sun) rise in glowing rays, and felt the heat thereof on his basar (body), he was afraid of it, and thought in his lev (heart) that this flame came forth to plague him.
4 He wept then, and smote upon his breast, and fell upon the earth on his face, and made his request, saying: —
5 "O Yahuah , plague me not, neither consume me, nor yet take away my life from the earth."
6 For he thought the shemesh was Elohim .
7 Inasmuch as while he was in the Gan (Garden) and heard the voice of Elohim and the sound He made in the Gan , and feared Him, Adam never saw the brilliant ohr of the shemesh , neither did the flaming heat thereof touch his basar .
8 Therefore was he afraid of the shemesh when flaming rays of it reached him. He thought Elohim meant to plague him therewith all the yamim (days) He had decreed for him.
9 For Adam also said in his thoughts, "As Elohim did not plague us with choshech (darkness), behold, He has caused this shemesh to rise and to plague us with burning heat."
10 But while he was thus thinking in his lev , the Davar Elohim (Word of God) came unto him and said:—
11 "O Adam , arise and stand up. This shemesh is not Elohim ; but it has been created to give ohr by day, of which I spoke unto you in the me'arah saying, 'that the shachar (dawn) would break forth, and there would be ohr by day.'
12 "But I am Elohim who comforted you in the lailah (night)."
13 And Elohim ceased to commune with Adam .

Chapter 18 The Mortal Combats with the Serpent

1 When the accursed nachash (serpent) saw Adam and Chawah (Eve), it swelled its head, stood on its tail, and with eyes blood-red, did as if it would kill them.
2 It made straight for Chawah, and ran after her; while Adam standing by, wept because he had no stick in his hand with which to smite the nachash, and knew not how to put it to death.
3 But with a heart burning for Chawah, Adam approached the nachash, and held it by the tail; when it turned towards him and said unto him: —
4 "O Adam, because of you and of Chawah, I am slippery, and go upon my belly." Then by reason of its great strength, it threw down Adam and Chawah and pressed upon them, as if it would kill them.
5 But Elohim sent a malach (angel) who threw the nachash away from them, and raised them up.
6 Then the Davar Elohim (Word of God) came to the nachash, and said unto it, "In the first instance I made you glib, and made you to go upon your belly; but I did not deprive you of speech.
7 "Now, however, be you dumb; and speak no more, you and your zera (seed); because in the first place, has the ruin of My creatures happened through you, and now you wish to kill them."
8 Then the nachash was struck dumb, and spoke no more.
9 And a ruach (wind) came to blow from shamayim (heaven) by command of Elohim that carried away the nachash from Adam and Chawah, threw it on the sea shore, and it landed in India.

Chapter 19 Beasts Made Subject to Adam

1 But Adam and Chawah (Eve) wept before Elohim. And Adam said unto Him: —
2 "O Yahuah, when I was in the me'arah (cave), I said this to You, my Adonai, that the chayot (beasts) of the field would rise and devour me, and cut off my life from the earth."
3 Then Adam, by reason of what had befallen him, smote upon his breast, and fell upon the earth like a corpse; then came to him the Davar Elohim (Word of God), who raised him, and said unto him,
4 "O Adam , not one of these chayot will be able to hurt you; because when I made the chayot and other moving things come to you in the me'arah , I did not let the nachash (serpent) come with them, lest it should rise against you, make you tremble; and the fear of it should fall into your hearts.
5 "For I knew that that accursed one is wicked; therefore, would I not let it come near you with the other chayot.
6 "But now strengthen your lev (heart) and fear not. I am with you unto the end of the yamim (days) I have determined on you."

Chapter 20 Adam Wishes to Protect Chawah

1 Then Adam wept and said, "O Yahuah, remove us to some other makom (place), that the nachash (serpent) may not come again near us, and rise against us. Lest it find Your handmaid Chawah (Eve) alone and kill her; for its eyes are hideous and evil."
2 But Elohim said to Adam and Chawah, "Henceforth fear not, I will not let it come near you; I have driven it away from you, from this har (mountain); neither will I leave in it anything to hurt you."
3 Then Adam and Chawah worshipped before Elohim and gave Him thanks, and praised Him for having delivered them from mavet (death).

Chapter 21 Adam and Chawah Attempt Suicide

1 Then Adam and Chawah (Eve) went in search of the Gan (Garden).
2 And the heat beat like a flame on their faces; and they sweated from the heat, and wept before Yahuah.
3 But the place where they wept was nigh unto a high har (mountain), facing the western sha'ar (gate) of the Gan.
4 Then Adam threw himself down from the top of that har; his face was torn and his basar (flesh) was flayed; much dam (blood) flowed from him, and he was nigh unto mavet (death).
5 Meanwhile Chawah remained standing on the har, weeping over him, thus lying.
6 And she said, "I wish not to live after him; for all that he did to himself was through me."
7 Then she threw herself after him; and was torn and scotched by stones; and remained lying as dead.
8 But the merciful Elohim, who looks upon His creatures, looked upon Adam and Chawah as they lay dead, and He sent His Davar (Word) unto them, and raised them.
9 And said to Adam, "O Adam, all this misery which you have wrought upon yourself, will not avail against My rule, neither will it alter the beriyt (covenant) of the 5500 shanim (years)."

Chapter 22 Adam in a Chivalrous Mood

1 Adam said to Elohim, "I wither in the heat; I am faint from walking, and am loath of this world [Olam HaZeh עולם הזה]. And I know not when You will bring me out of it, to rest."
2 Then Yahuah Elohim said unto him, "O Adam, it cannot be at present, not until you have ended your yamim (days). Then shall I bring you out of this wretched land."
3 And Adam said to Elohim, "While I was in the Gan (Garden), I knew neither heat, nor languor, neither moving about, nor trembling, nor fear; but now since I came to this land, all this affliction has come upon me."
4 Then Elohim said to Adam, "So long as you were keeping My mitzvah (commandment), My Or [light] and My chen (grace) rested on you. But when you transgressed My mitzvah, sorrow and misery befell you in this land."
5 And Adam wept and said, "O Yahuah , do not cut me off for this, neither smite me with heavy plagues, nor yet repay me according to my chet (sin) ; for we, of our own will, transgressed Your mitzvah , and forsook Your Torah (law), and sought to become elohim (gods) like unto You, when Satan the enemy deceived us."
6 Then Elohim said again unto Adam, "Because you have borne fear and trembling in this land, languor and suffering, treading and walking about, going upon this har (mountain), and dying from it, I will take all this upon Myself in order to save you."

Chapter 23 Adam and Chawah Gird Themselves and Make the First Altar Ever Built

1 Then Adam wept more and said, "O Elohim, have mercy on me, so far as to take upon Thee, that which I will do."
2 But Elohim withdrew His Davar (Word) from Adam and Chawah (Eve).
3 Then Adam and Chawah stood on their feet; and Adam said to Chawah, "Gird thyself, and I also will gird myself." And she girded herself, as Adam told her.
4 Then Adam and Chawah took stones and placed them in the shape of a mizbe'ach (altar); and they took leaves from the trees outside the Gan (Garden), with which they wiped, from the face of the rock, the dam (blood) they had spilled.
5 But that which had dropped on the sand, they took together with the dust wherewith it was mingled, and offered it upon the mizbe'ach as a korban (offering) unto Elohim.
6 Then Adam and Chawah stood under the mizbe'ach and wept, thus entreating Elohim, "Forgive us our pesha (trespass) and our chet (sin), and look upon us with Thine eye of mercy. For when we were in the Gan, our praises and our hymns went up before Thee without ceasing.
7 "But when we came into this strange land, pure praise was no longer ours, nor righteous tefillah (prayer), nor understanding hearts, nor sweet thoughts, nor just counsels, nor long discernment, nor upright feelings; neither is our bright nature left us. But our body is changed from the similitude in which it was at first, when we were created.
8 "Yet now look upon our dam which is offered upon these stones, and accept it at our hands, like the praise we used to sing unto Thee at first, when in the Gan."
9 And Adam began to make more requests unto Elohim.

Chapter 24 A Vivid Prophecy of the Life and Death of the Mashiach

1 Then the merciful Elohim, good and lover of men, looked upon Adam and Chawah (Eve), and upon their dam (blood), which they had held up as a korban (offering) unto Him; without an order from Him for so doing. But He wondered at them; and accepted their offerings.
2 And Elohim sent from His presence a bright esh (fire), that consumed their korban.
3 He smelled the sweet rei'ach (savour) of their korban , and showed them mercy.
4 Then came the Davar Elohim (Word of God) to Adam, and said unto him, "O Adam, as you have shed your dam, so will I shed My own dam when I become basar (flesh) of your zera (seed); and as you did die, O Adam, so also will I die. And as you did build a mizbe'ach (altar), so also will I make for you a mizbe'ach on the earth; and as you did offer your dam upon it, so also will I offer My dam upon a mizbe'ach on the earth.
5 "And as you did sue for forgiveness through that dam, so also will I make My dam forgiveness of sins, and blot out transgressions in it.
6 "And now, behold, I have accepted your korban, O Adam, but the yamim (days) of the beriyt (covenant), wherein I have bound you, are not fulfilled. When they are fulfilled, then will I bring you back into the Gan (Garden, Gospel of Nicodemus 19-22)
7 "Now, therefore, strengthen your lev (heart); and when sorrow comes upon you, make Me a korban, and I will be favourable to you."

Chapter 25 God Represented as Merciful and Loving; The Establishing of Worship

1 But Elohim knew that Adam had in his thoughts, that he should often kill himself and make a korban (offering) to Him of his dam (blood).
2 Therefore did He say unto him, "O Adam, do not again kill thyself as thou didst, by throwing thyself down from that har (mountain)."
3 But Adam said unto Elohim , "It was in my mind to put an end to myself at once, for having transgressed Thy mitzvot (commandments), and for my having come out of the beautiful Gan (Garden); and for the bright or (light) of which Thou hast deprived me; and for the praises which poured forth from my mouth without ceasing, and for the or that covered me.
4 "Yet of Thy goodness, O Elohim, do not away with me altogether; but be favourable to me every time I die, and bring me to Chayim (life).
5 "And thereby it will be made known that Thou art a merciful Elohim, who willest not that one should perish; who lovest not that one should fall; and who dost not condemn any one cruelly, badly, and by whole destruction."
6 Then Adam remained silent.
7 And the Davar Elohim (Word of God) came unto him, and blessed him, and comforted him, and covenanted with him, making a beriyt (covenant) that He would save him at the end of the yamim (days) determined upon him.
8 This, then, was the first korban Adam made unto Elohim; and so, it became his mishpat (custom) to do.

Chapter 26 A Beautiful Prophecy of Eternal Life and Joy; The Fall of Night

1 Then Adam took Chawah (Eve), and they began to return to the Me'arat HaOtzar (Cave of Treasures), where they dwelt. But when they neared it and saw it from afar, heavy sorrow fell upon Adam and Chawah when they looked at it.
2 Then Adam said to Chawah, "When we were on the har (mountain), we were comforted by the Davar Elohim (Word of God) that conversed with us; and the Or (light) that came from the east, shone over us.
3 "But now the Davar Elohim is hidden from us; and the or that shone over us is so changed as to disappear, and let choshech (darkness) and sorrow come upon us.
4 "And we are forced to enter this me'arah (cave), which is like a prison, wherein choshech covers us, so that we are parted from each other; and you cannot see me, neither can I see you."
5 When Adam had said these words, they wept and spread their hands before Elohim; for they were full of sorrow.
6 And they entreated Elohim to bring the shemesh (sun) to them, to shine on them, so that choshech return not upon them, and they come not again under this covering of rock. And they wished to die rather than see the choshech.
7 Then Elohim looked upon Adam and Chawah and upon their great sorrow, and upon all they had done with a fervent lev (heart), on account of all the trouble they were in, instead of their former well-being, and on account of all the misery that came upon them in a strange land.
8 Therefore Elohim was not wroth with them; nor impatient with them; but He was longsuffering and forbearing towards them, as towards the children He had created.
9 Then came the Davar Elohim to Adam, and said unto him, " Adam, as for the shemesh, if I were to take it and bring it to you, yamim (days), hours, shanim (years), and months would all come to naught, and the beriyt (covenant) I have made with you, would never be fulfilled.
10 "But you should then be turned and left in a long plague, and no yeshuah (salvation) would be left to you forever.
11 "Yea, rather, bear long and calm your nefesh (soul) while you abide night and day; until the fulfillment of the yamim, and the time of My beryit is come.
12 "Then shall I come and save you, O Adam, for I do not wish that you be afflicted.
13 "And when I look at all the good things in which you did live, and why you came out of them, then would I willingly show you mercy.
14 "But I cannot alter the beriyt that has gone out of My mouth; else would I have brought you back into the Gan (Garden).
15 "When, however, the beriyt is fulfilled, then shall I show you and your zera (seed) mercy, and bring you into a land of gladness, where there is neither sorrow nor suffering; but abiding joy and gladness, and Or that never fails, and praises that never cease; and a beautiful Gan that shall never pass away."
16 And Elohim said again unto Adam, "Be long-suffering and enter the me'arah , for the choshech, of which you were afraid, shall only be twelve hours long; and when ended, or shall arise."
17 Then when Adam heard these words from Elohim, he and Chawah worshipped before Him, and their hearts were comforted. They returned into the me'arah after their mishpat (custom), while tears flowed from their eyes, sorrow and wailing came from their hearts, and they wished their nefesh would leave their body.
18 And Adam and Chawah stood praying, until the choshech of lailah (night) came upon them, and Adam was hid from Chawah, and she from him.
19 And they remained standing in tefillah (prayer).

Chapter 27 The Second Tempting of Adam and Chawah; The Devil Takes on the Form of a Beguiling Light

1 When Satan, the hater of all good, saw how they continued in tefillah (prayer), and how Elohim communed with them, and comforted them, and how He had accepted their korban (offering)— Satan made an apparition.
2 He began with transforming his hosts; in his hands was a flashing esh (fire), and they were in a great or (light).
3 He then placed his throne near the mouth of the me'arah (cave) because he could not enter into it by reason of their prayers. And he shed light into the me'arah , until the cave glistened over Adam and Chawah (Eve); while his hosts began to sing praises.
4 And Satan did this, in order that when Adam saw the or, he should think within himself that it was a heavenly or, and that Satan's hosts were malachim (angels); and that Elohim had sent them to watch at the me'arah , and to give him light in the choshech (darkness).
5 So that when Adam came out of the me'arah and saw them, and Adam and Chawah bowed to Satan, then he would overcome Adam thereby, and a second time humble him before Elohim.
6 When, therefore, Adam and Chawah saw the or, fancying it was real, they strengthened their hearts; yet, as they were trembling, Adam said to Chawah :—
7 "Look at that great or, and at those many songs of praise, and at that host standing outside that do not come in to us, do not tell us what they say, or whence they come, or what is the meaning of this or; what those praises are; wherefore they have been sent hither, and why they do not come in.
8 "If they were from Elohim, they would come to us in the me'arah , and would tell us their errand."
9 Then Adam stood up and prayed unto Elohim with a fervent lev (heart), and said: —
10 "O Yahuah, is there in the world another El (god) than You, who created malachim and filled them with or, and sent them to keep us, who would come with them?
11 "But, lo, we see these hosts that stand at the mouth of the me'arah; they are in a great or; they sing loud praises. If they are of some other El than You, tell me; and if they are sent by You, inform me of the reason for which You have sent them."
12 No sooner had Adam said this, than a malach (angel) from Elohim appeared unto him in the me'arah, who said unto him, "O Adam, fear not. This is Satan and his hosts; he wishes to deceive you as he deceived you at first. For the first time, he was hidden in the nachash (serpent); but this time he is come to you in the similitude of a malach of or; in order that, when you worshipped him, he might enthrall you, in the very presence of Elohim."
13 Then the malach went from Adam, and seized Satan at the opening of the me'arah, and stripped him of the feint he had assumed, and brought him in his own hideous form to Adam and Chawah; who were afraid of him when they saw him.
14 And the malach said to Adam, "This hideous form has been his ever since Elohim made him fall from shamayim (heaven). He could not have come near you in it; therefore did he transform himself into a malach of Or."
15 Then the malach drove away Satan and his hosts from Adam and Chawah, and said unto them, "Fear not; Elohim who created you, will strengthen you."
16 And the malach went from them.
17 But Adam and Chawah remained standing in the me'arah ; no consolation came to them; they were divided in their thoughts.
18 And when it was boker (morning), they prayed and then went out to seek the Gan (Garden). For their hearts were towards it, and they could get no consolation for having left it.

Chapter 28 The Devil Pretends to Lead Adam and Chawah to the Water to Bathe

1 But when the wily Satan saw them, that they were going to the Gan (Garden), he gathered together his tzava (host), and came in appearance upon a cloud, intent on deceiving them.
2 But when Adam and Chawah (Eve) saw him thus in a vision, they thought they were malachim (angels) of Elohim come to comfort them about their having left the Gan, or to bring them back again into it.
3 And Adam spread his hands unto Elohim, beseeching Him to make him understand what they were.
4 Then Satan, the hater of all good, said unto Adam, "O Adam, I am a malach (angel) of the great Elohim; and, behold the hosts that surround me.
5 "Elohim has sent me and them to take you and bring you to the border of the Gan northwards; to the shore of the clear sea, and bathe you and Chawah in it, and raise you to your former gladness, that you return again to the Gan."
6 These words sank into the lev (heart) of Adam and Chawah.
7 Yet Elohim withheld His Davar (Word) from Adam , and did not make him understand at once, but waited to see his strength; whether he would be overcome as Chawah was when in the Gan , or whether he would prevail.
8 Then Satan called to Adam and Chawah, and said, "Behold, we go to the sea of water," and they began to go.
9 And Adam and Chawah followed them at some little distance.
10 But when they came to the har (mountain) to the north of the Gan , a very high har , without any steps to the top of it, the Devil drew near to Adam and Chawah , and made them go up to the top in reality, and not in a vision; wishing, as he did, to throw them down and kill them, and to wipe off their name from the earth; so that this earth should remain to him and his hosts alone.

Chapter 29 Elohim Tells Adam of the Devil's Purpose

1 But when the merciful Elohim saw that Satan wished to kill Adam with his manifold devices, and saw that Adam was meek and without guile, Elohim spoke unto Satan in a loud voice, and cursed him.
2 Then he and his hosts fled, and Adam and Chawah (Eve) remained standing on the top of the har (mountain), whence they saw below them the wide world, high above which they were. But they saw none of the hosts, which were by them.
3 They wept, both Adam and Chawah, before Elohim, and begged for forgiveness of Him.
4 Then came the Davar (Word) from Elohim to Adam, and said unto him, "Know you and understand concerning this Satan, that he seeks to deceive you and your zera (seed) after you."
5 And Adam wept before Yahuah Elohim, and begged and entreated Him to give him something from the Gan (Garden), as a token to him, wherein to be comforted.
6 And Elohim looked upon Adam's thought, and sent the malach Michael (angel Michael) as far as the sea that reaches unto India, to take from thence golden rods and bring them to Adam.
7 This did Elohim in His wisdom, in order that these golden rods, being with Adam in the me'arah (cave), should shine forth with light in the night around him, and put an end to his fear of the choshech (darkness).
8 Then the malach Michael went down by Elohim's order, took golden rods, as Elohim had commanded him, and brought them to Elohim.

Chapter 30 Adam Receives the First Worldly Goods

1 After these things, Elohim commanded the malach Gabriel (angel Gabriel) to go down to the Gan (Garden), and say to the keruv (cherub) who kept it, "Behold, Elohim has commanded me to come into the Gan, and to take thence sweet-smelling ketoret (incense), and give it to Adam."
2 Then the malach Gabriel went down by Elohim's order to the Gan, and told the keruv as Elohim had commanded him.
3 The keruv then said, "Well." And Gabriel went in and took the ketoret.
4 Then Elohim commanded His malach Raphael (angel Raphael) to go down to the Gan, and speak to the keruv about some mor (myrrh), to give to Adam.
5 And the malach Raphael went down and told the keruv as Elohim had commanded him, and the keruv said, "Well." Then Raphael went in and took the mor.
6 The golden rods were from the Indian sea, where there are precious stones. The ketoret was from the eastern border of the Gan; and the mor from the western border, whence bitterness came upon Adam.
7 And the malachim (angels) brought these three things to Elohim, by the Etz HaChayim (Tree of Life), in the Gan.
8 Then Elohim said to the malachim, "Dip them in the spring of mayim (water); then take them and sprinkle their water over Adam and Chawah (Eve), that they be a little comforted in their sorrow, and give them to Adam and Chawah."
9 And the malachim did as Elohim had commanded them, and they gave all those things to Adam and Chawah on the top of the har (mountain) upon which Satan had placed them, when he sought to make an end of them.
10 And when Adam saw the golden rods, the ketoret and the mor, he was rejoiced and wept because he thought that the gold was a token of the kingdom whence, he had come, that the ketoret was a token of the bright or (light) which had been taken from him, and that the mor was a token of the sorrow in which he was.

Chapter 31 They Make Themselves More Comfortable in the Cave of Treasures on the Third Day

1 After these things Elohim said unto Adam, "Thou didst ask of Me something from the Gan (Garden), to be comforted therewith, and I have given thee these three tokens as a consolation to thee; that thou trust in Me and in My beriyt (covenant) with thee.
2 "For I will come and save thee; and melachim (kings) shall bring me when in the basar (flesh), zahav (gold), ketoret (incense), and mor (myrrh); zahav as a token of My kingdom; ketoret as a token of My divinity; and mor as a token of My suffering and of My death.
3 "But, O Adam, put these by thee in the me'arah (cave); the zahav that it may shed or (light) over thee by lailah (night); the ketoret, that thou smell its sweet savour; and the mor, to comfort thee in thy sorrow."
4 When Adam heard these words from Elohim, he worshipped before Him. He and Chawah (Eve) worshipped Him and gave Him thanks, because He had dealt mercifully with them.
5 Then Elohim commanded the three malachim (angels), Michael , Gabriel , and Raphael , each to bring what he had brought, and give it to Adam . And they did so, one by one.
6 And Elohim commanded Suriyel and Salathiel to bear up Adam and Chawah , and bring them down from the top of the high har (mountain), and to take them to the Me'arat HaOtzar (Cave of Treasures).
7 There they laid the zahav on the south side of the me'arah , the ketoret on the eastern side, and the mor on the western side. For the mouth of the me'arah was on the north side.
8 The malachim then comforted Adam and Chawah , and departed.
9 The zahav was seventy rods; the ketoret , twelve pounds; and the mor , three pounds.
10 These remained by Adam in the Beit HaOtzar (House of Treasures); therefore was it called "of concealment." But other interpreters say it was called the Me'arat HaOtzar , by reason of the bodies of tzaddikim (righteous men) that were in it.
11 These three things did Elohim give to Adam , on the third yom (day) after he had come out of the Gan , in token of the three yamim (days) Yahuah should remain in the heart of the earth.
12 And these three things, as they continued with Adam in the me’arah, gave him or by lailah ; and by yom they gave him a little relief from his sorrow.

Chapter 32 Adam and Chawah Go into the Water to Pray

1 And Adam and Chawah (Eve) remained in the Me'arat HaOtzar (Cave of Treasures) until the seventh yom (day); they neither ate of the fruit of the earth, nor drank mayim (water).
2 And when it dawned on the eighth yom (Day), Adam said to Chawah , "O Chawah , we prayed Elohim to give us something from the Gan (Garden), and He sent His malachim (angels) who brought us what we had desired.
3 "But now, arise, let us go to the yam (sea) of mayim we saw at first, and let us stand in it, praying that Elohim will again be favourable to us and take us back to the Gan; or give us something; or that He will give us comfort in some other land than this in which we are."
4 Then Adam and Chawah came out of the me'arah (cave), went and stood on the border of the yam in which they had before thrown themselves, and Adam said to Chawah: —
5 "Come, go down into this place, and come not out of it until the end of thirty yamim (days), when I shall come to thee. And pray to Elohim with fervent lev (heart) and a sweet voice, to forgive us.
6 "And I will go to another place, and go down into it, and do like thee."
7 Then Chawah went down into the mayim, as Adam had commanded her. Adam also went down into the mayim; and they stood praying; and besought Yahuah to forgive them their pesha (offence), and to restore them to their former state.
8 And they stood thus praying, unto the end of the five-and-thirty yamim.

Chapter 33 Satan Falsely Promises the "Bright Light!"

1 But Satan, the hater of all good, sought them in the me'arah (cave), but found them not, although he searched diligently for them.
2 But he found them standing in the mayim (water) praying and thought within himself, " Adam and Chawah are thus standing in that mayim beseeching Elohim to forgive them their pesha (transgression), and to restore them to their former estate, and to take them from under my hand.
3 "But I will deceive them so that they shall come out of the mayim, and not fulfill their neder (vow)."
4 Then the hater of all good, went not to Adam, but he went to Chawah (Eve), and took the form of a malach (angel) of Elohim, praising and rejoicing, and said to her—
5 " Shalom (Peace) be unto thee! Be glad and rejoice! Elohim is favourable unto you, and He sent me to Adam. I have brought him the glad tidings of yeshuah (salvation), and of his being filled with bright or (light) as he was at first.
6 "And Adam, in his simcha (joy) for his restoration, has sent me to thee, that thou come to me, in order that I crown thee with or like him.
7 "And he said to me, 'Speak unto Chawah ; if she does not come with thee, tell her of the ot (sign) when we were on the top of the har (mountain); how Elohim sent His malachim (angels) who took us and brought us to the Me'arat HaOtzar (Cave of Treasures); and laid the zahav (gold) on the southern side; ketoret (incense), on the eastern side; and mor (myrrh) on the western side.' Now come to him."
8 When Chawah heard these words from him, she rejoiced greatly. And thinking that Satan's appearance was real, she came out of the yam (sea).
9 He went before, and she followed him until they came to Adam. Then Satan hid himself from her, and she saw him no more.
10 She then came and stood before Adam, who was standing by the mayim and rejoicing in Elohim's forgiveness.
11 And as she called to him, he turned round, found her there and wept when he saw her, and smote upon his breast; and from the bitterness of his grief, he sank into the mayim.
12 But Elohim looked upon him and upon his misery, and upon his being about to breathe his last. And the Davar Elohim (Word of God) came from shamayim (heaven), raised him out of the mayim, and said unto him, "Go up the high bank to Chawah." And when he came up to Chawah he said unto her, "Who said to thee 'come hither'?"
13 Then she told him the discourse of the malach who had appeared unto her and had given her a ot.
14 But Adam grieved, and gave her to know it was Satan. He then took her and they both returned to the me’arah.
15 These things happened to them the second time they went down to the mayim, seven yamim (days) after their coming out of the Gan (Garden).
16 They fasted in the mayim thirty-five yamim; altogether forty-two yamim since they had left the Gan.

Chapter 34 Adam Recalls the Creation of Chawah; He Eloquently Appeals for Food and Drink

1 And on the boker (morning) of the forty-third yom (day), they came out of the me'arah (cave), sorrowful and weeping. Their bodies were lean, and they were parched from hunger and thirst, from fasting and praying, and from their heavy sorrow on account of their pesha (transgression).
2 And when they had come out of the me'arah , they went up the har (mountain) to the west of the Gan (Garden).
3 There they stood and prayed and besought Elohim to grant them forgiveness of their sins.
4 And after their prayers, Adam began to entreat Elohim , saying, "O my Yahuah , my Elohim , and my Creator, Thou didst command the four elements to be gathered together, and they were gathered together by Thine order.
5 "Then Thou spreadest Thy hand and didst create me out of one element, that of dust of the earth; and Thou didst bring me into the Gan at the third hour, on a Yom Shishi (6th day), and didst inform me of it in the me'arah .
6 "Then, at first, I knew neither lailah (night) nor yom (day), for I had a bright nature; neither did the or (light) in which I lived ever leave me to know lailah or yom.
7 "Then, again, O Yahuah, in that third hour in which Thou didst create me, Thou broughtest to me all beasts, and lions, and ostriches, and fowls of the air, and all things that move in the earth, which Thou hadst created at the first hour before me of the Yom Shishi .
8 "And Thy will was that I should name them all, one by one, with a suitable name. But Thou gavest me understanding and knowledge, and a pure lev (heart) and a right mind from Thee, that I should name them after Thine own mind regarding the naming of them.
9 "O Elohim, Thou madest them obedient to me, and didst order that not one of them break from my sway, according to Thy mitzvah (commandment), and to the dominion which Thou hast given me over them. But now they are all estranged from me.
10 "Then it was in that third hour of Yom Shishi , in which Thou didst create me, and didst command me concerning the etz (tree), to which I was neither to draw near, nor to eat thereof; for Thou saidst to me in the Gan , 'When thou eatest of it, of death thou shalt die.'
11 "And if Thou hadst punished me as Thou saidst, with death, I should have died that very moment.
12 "Moreover, when Thou commandedst me regarding the etz , I was neither to approach nor to eat thereof, Chawah (Eve) was not with me; Thou hadst not yet created her, neither hadst Thou yet taken her out of my side; nor had she yet heard this order from Thee.
13 "Then, at the end of the third hour of that Yom Shishi , O Yahuah , Thou didst cause a slumber and a sleep to come over me, and I slept, and was overwhelmed in sleep.
14 "Then Thou didst draw a rib out of my side, and created it after my own similitude and image. Then I awoke; and when I saw her and knew who she was, I said, 'This is bone of my bones, and basar (flesh) of my basar ; henceforth she shall be called woman.'
15 "It was of Thy good will, O Elohim , that Thou broughtest a slumber and a sleep over me, and that Thou didst forthwith bring Chawah out of my side, until she was out, so that I did not see how she was made; neither could I witness, O my Yahuah , how awful and great are Thy goodness and glory.
16 "And of Thy goodwill, O Yahuah , Thou madest us both with bodies of a bright nature, and Thou madest us two, one; and Thou gavest us Thy chen (grace), and didst fill us with praises of the Ruach HaKodesh (Holy Spirit); that we should be neither hungry nor thirsty, nor know what sorrow is, nor yet faintness of heart; neither suffering, fasting, nor weariness.
17 "But now, O Elohim, since we transgressed Thy mitzvah and broke Thy Torah (law), Thou hast brought us out into a strange land, and hast caused suffering, and faintness, hunger, and thirst to come upon us.
18 "Now, therefore, O Elohim, we pray Thee, give us something to eat from the Gan, to satisfy our hunger with it; and something wherewith to quench our thirst.
19 "For, behold, many yamim (days), O Elohim, we have tasted nothing and drunk nothing, and our basar is dried up, and our strength is wasted, and sleep is gone from our eyes from faintness and weeping.
20 "Then, O Elohim, we dare not gather aught of the fruit of trees, from fear of Thee. For when we transgressed at first, Thou didst spare us, and didst not make us die.
21 "But now, we thought in our hearts, if we eat of the fruit of trees, without Elohim's order, He will destroy us this time, and will wipe us off from the face of the earth.
22 "And if we drink of this mayim (water), without Elohim's order, He will make an end of us, and root us up at once.
23 "Now, therefore, O Elohim, that I am come to this place with Chawah, we beg Thou wilt give us of the fruit of the Gan, that we may be satisfied with it.
24 "For we desire the fruit that is on the earth, and all else that we lack in it."

Chapter 36 Figs

1 Then Elohim commanded the keruv (cherub), who kept the gate of the Gan (Garden) with a cherev (sword) of esh (fire) in his hand, to take some of the fruit of the te'enah (fig tree), and to give it to Adam.
2 The keruv obeyed the command of Yahuah Elohim , and went into the Gan and brought two figs on two twigs, each fig hanging to its leaf; they were from two of the trees among which Adam and Chawah (Eve) hid themselves when Elohim went to walk in the Gan , and the Davar Elohim (Word of God) came to Adam and Chawah and said unto them, " Adam , Adam , where art thou?"
3 And Adam answered, "O Elohim, here am I. When I heard the sound of Thee and Thy voice, I hid myself, because I am naked."
4 Then the keruv took two figs and brought them to Adam and Chawah. But he threw them to them from afar; for they might not come near the keruv by reason of their basar (flesh), that could not come near the esh.
5 At first, malachim (angels) trembled at the presence of Adam and were afraid of him. But now Adam trembled before the malachim and was afraid of them.
6 Then Adam drew near and took one fig, and Chawah also came in turn and took the other.
7 And as they took them up in their hands, they looked at them, and knew they were from the trees among which they had hidden themselves.

Chapter 37 Forty-three Days of Penance Do Not Redeem One Hour of Sin

1 Then Adam said to Chawah (Eve), "Seest thou not these figs and their leaves, with which we covered ourselves when we were stripped of our bright nature? But now, we know not what misery and suffering may come upon us from eating them.
2 "Now, therefore, O Chawah, let us restrain ourselves and not eat of them, thou and I; and let us ask Elohim to give us of the fruit of the Etz HaChayim (Tree of Life)."
3 Thus did Adam and Chawah restrain themselves, and did not eat of these figs.
4 But Adam began to pray to Elohim and to beseech Him to give him of the fruit of the Etz HaChayim , saying thus: "O Elohim , when we transgressed Thy mitzvah (commandment) at the sixth hour of the sixth yom (day), we were stripped of the bright nature we had, and did not continue in the Gan (Garden) after our pesha (transgression), more than three hours.
5 "But on the evening Thou madest us come out of it. O Elohim , we transgressed against Thee one hour, and all these trials and sorrows have come upon us until this yom .
6 "And those yamim (days) together with this, the forty-third yom , do not redeem that one hour in which we transgressed!
7 "O Elohim , look upon us with an eye of pity, and do not requite us according to our pesha of Thy mitzvah , in presence of Thee.
8 "O, Elohim , give us of the fruit of the Etz HaChayim , that we may eat of it, and live, and turn not to see sufferings and other trouble, in this earth; for Thou art Elohim .
9 "When we transgressed Thy mitzvah , Thou madest us come out of the Gan , and didst send a keruv (cherub) to keep the Etz HaChayim , lest we should eat thereof, and live; and know nothing of faintness after we transgressed.
10 "But now, O Yahuah, behold, we have endured all these yamim , and have borne sufferings. Make these forty-three yamim an equivalent for the one hour in which we transgressed."

Chapter 38 "When 5500 Years Are Fulfilled ..."

1 After these things, the Davar Elohim (Word of God) came to Adam , and said unto him:—
2 "O Adam , as to the fruit of the Etz HaChayim (Tree of Life), for which thou askest, I will not give it thee now, but when the 5500 years are fulfilled. Then will I give thee of the fruit of the Etz HaChayim , and thou shalt eat, and live for ever, thou, and Chawah (Eve), and thy righteous zera (seed).
3 "But these forty-three yamim (days) cannot make amends for the hour in which thou didst transgress My mitzvah (commandment).
4 "O Adam , I gave thee to eat of the fig-tree in which thou didst hide thyself. Go and eat of it, thou and Chawah .
5 "I will not deny thy request, neither will I disappoint thy hope; therefore, bear up unto the fulfillment of the berit (covenant) I made with thee."
6 And Elohim withdrew His Davar from Adam.

Chapter 40 The First Human Hunger

1 Then the Davar Elohim (Word of God) came to Adam , and said unto him, "O, Adam , why hadst thou not this dread, neither this fasting, nor this care ere this? And why hadst thou not this fear before thou didst transgress?
2 "But when thou camest to dwell in this strange land, thy animal basar (body) could not be on earth without earthly food, to strengthen it and to restore its powers."
3 And Elohim withdrew His Davar from Adam.

Chapter 41 The First Human Thirst

1 Then Adam took the fig, and laid it on the golden rods. Chawah (Eve) also took her fig, and put it upon the incense.
2 And the weight of each fig was that of a water-melon; for the fruit of the Gan (Garden) was much larger than the fruit of this land.
3 But Adam and Chawah remained standing and fasting the whole of that night, until the morning dawned.
4 When the shemesh (sun) rose they were at their prayers, and Adam said to Chawah , after they had done praying:—
5 "O Chawah , come, let us go to the border of the Gan looking south; to the place whence the river flows, and is parted into four heads. There we will pray to Elohim , and ask Him to give us to drink of the Mayim HaChayim (Water of Life).
6 "For Elohim has not fed us with the Etz HaChayim (Tree of Life), in order that we may not live. We will, therefore, ask Him to give us of the Mayim HaChayim , and to quench our thirst with it, rather than with a drink of water of this land."
7 When Chawah heard these words from Adam , she agreed; and they both arose and came to the southern border of the Gan , upon the brink of the river of water at some little distance from the Gan .
8 And they stood and prayed before Yahuah , and asked Him to look upon them this once, to forgive them, and to grant them their request.
9 After this prayer from both of them, Adam began to pray with his voice before Elohim , and said:—
10 "O Yahuah , when I was in the Gan and saw the water that flowed from under the Etz HaChayim , my heart did not desire, neither did my body require to drink of it; neither did I know thirst, for I was living; and above that which I am now.
11 "So that in order to live I did not require any Lechem HaChayim (Food of Life), neither did I drink of the Mayim HaChayim .
12 "But now, O Elohim , I am dead; my basar (flesh) is parched with thirst. Give me of the Mayim HaChayim that I may drink of it and live.
13 "Of Thy mercy, O Elohim , save me from these plagues and trials, and bring me into another land different from this, if Thou wilt not let me dwell in Thy Gan ."

Chapter 42 A Promise of the Water of Life; The Third Prophecy of the Coming of Mashiach

1 Then came the Davar Elohim (Word of God) to Adam , and said unto him:—
2 "O Adam , as to what thou sayest, 'Bring me into a land where there is rest,' it is not another land than this, but it is the Malkut HaShamayim (kingdom of heaven) where alone there is rest.
3 "But thou canst not make thy entrance into it at present; but only after thy judgment is past and fulfilled.
4 "Then will I make thee go up into the Malkut HaShamayim , thee and thy righteous zera (seed); and I will give thee and them the rest thou askest for at present.
5 "And if thou saidst, 'Give me of the Mayim HaChayim (Water of Life) that I may drink and live'—it cannot be this yom (day), but on the yom that I shall descend into Sheol (hell), and break the gates of brass, and bruise in pieces the kingdoms of iron.
6 "Then will I in mercy save thy nefesh (soul) and the souls of the tzaddikim (righteous), to give them rest in My Gan (Garden). And that shall be when the end of the olam (world) is come.
7 "And, again, as regards the Mayim HaChayim thou seekest, it will not be granted thee this yom ; but on the yom that I shall shed My dam (blood) upon thy head in the land of Gulgoleth (Golgotha).
8 "For My dam shall be the Mayim HaChayim unto thee, at that time, and not to thee alone, but unto all those of thy zera who shall believe in Me; that it be unto them for rest for ever."
9 Yahuah said again unto Adam , "O Adam , when thou wast in the Gan , these trials did not come to thee.
10 "But since thou didst transgress My mitzvah (commandment), all these sufferings have come upon thee."

Chapter 43 Satan Attempts Arson

1 Then Adam and Chawah (Eve) were afraid, and stood still. And Adam said to Chawah , "What is that esh (fire) by our me'arah (cave)? We do nothing in it to bring about this esh .
2 "We neither have lechem (bread) to bake therein, nor broth to cook there. As to this esh , we know not the like, neither do we know what to call it.
3 "But ever since Elohim sent the keruv (cherub) with a cherev (sword) of esh that flashed and lightened in his hand, from fear of which we fell down and were like corpses, have we not seen the like.
4 "But now O Chawah , behold, this is the same esh that was in the keruv 's hand, which Elohim has sent to keep the me'arah in which we dwell.
5 "O Chawah , it is because Elohim is angry with us, and will drive us from it.
6 "O Chawah , we have again transgressed His mitzvah (commandment) in that me'arah , so that He had sent this esh to burn around it, and to prevent us from going into it.
7 "If this be really so, O Chawah , where shall we dwell? And whither shall we flee from before the face of Yahuah (the Lord)? Since, as regards the Gan (garden), He will not let us abide in it, and He has deprived us of the good things thereof; but He has placed us in this me'arah , in which we have borne darkness, trials, and hardships, until at last we found comfort therein.
8 "But now that He has brought us out into another land, who knows what may happen in it? And who knows but that the darkness of that land may be far greater than the darkness of this land?
9 "Who knows what may happen in that land by yom (day) or by lailah (night)? And who knows whether it will be far or near, O Chawah ? Where it will please Elohim to put us, may be far from the Gan , O Chawah ! or where Elohim will prevent us from beholding Him, because we have transgressed His mitzvah , and because we have made requests unto Him at all times?
10 "O Chawah , if Elohim will bring us into a strange land other than this, in which we find consolation, it must be to put our nefashot (souls) to death, and blot out our name from the face of the earth.
11 "O Chawah , if we are farther estranged from the Gan and from Elohim , where shall we find Him again, and ask Him to give us zahav (gold), ketoret (incense), mor (myrrh), and some fruit of the te'enah (fig-tree)?
12 "Where shall we find Him, to comfort us a second time? Where shall we find Him, that He may think of us, as regards the berit (covenant) He has made on our behalf."
13 Then Adam said no more. And they kept looking, he and Chawah , towards the me'arah , and at the esh that flared up around it.
14 But that esh was from Satan . For he had gathered etzim (trees/wood) and dry grasses, and had carried and brought them to the me'arah , and had set esh to them, in order to consume the me'arah and—what was in it.
15 So that Adam and Chawah should be left in sorrow, and he should cut off their trust in Elohim , and make them deny Him.
16 But by the mercy of Elohim he could not burn the me'arah , for Elohim sent His malach (angel) round the me'arah to guard it from such an esh , until it went out.
17 And this esh lasted from noon-day until the break of yom . That was the forty-fifth yom .

Chapter 44 The Power of Fire over Man

1 Yet Adam and Chawah (Eve) were standing and looking at the esh (fire), and unable to come near the me'arah (cave) from their dread of the esh .
2 And Satan kept on bringing etzim (trees/wood) and throwing them into the esh , until the flame thereof rose up on high, and covered the whole me'arah , thinking, as he did in his own mind, to consume the me'arah with much esh . But the malach (angel) of Yahuah was guarding it.
3 And yet he could not curse Satan , nor injure him by word, because he had no authority over him, neither did he take to doing so with words from his mouth.
4 Therefore did the malach bear with him, without saying one bad word until the Davar Elohim (Word of God) came, who said to Satan , "Go hence; once before didst thou deceive My servants, and this time thou seekest to destroy them.
5 "Were it not for My mercy, I would have destroyed thee and thy hosts from off the earth. But I have had patience with thee, unto the end of the olam (world)."
6 Then Satan fled from before Yahuah . But the esh went on burning around the me'arah like a coal fire the whole yom (day); which was the forty-sixth yom Adam and Chawah had spent since they came out of the Gan (Garden).
7 And when Adam and Chawah saw that the heat of the esh had somewhat cooled down, they began to walk towards the me'arah to get into it as they were wont; but they could not, by reason of the heat of the esh .
8 Then they both took to weeping because of the esh that made separation between them and the me'arah , and that drew towards them, burning. And they were afraid.
9 Then Adam said to Chawah , "See this esh of which we have a portion in us, which formerly yielded to us, but no longer does so, now that we have transgressed the limit of creation, and changed our condition, and our nature is altered. But the fire is not changed in its nature, nor altered from its creation. Therefore has it now power over us; and when we come near it, it scorches our basar (flesh)."

Chapter 45 Why Satan Didn't Fulfill His Promises

1 Then Adam rose and prayed unto Elohim (God), saying, "See, this esh (fire) has made separation between us and the me'arah (cave) in which Thou hast commanded us to dwell; but now, behold, we cannot go into it."
2 Then Elohim heard Adam , and sent him His Davar (Word), that said:—
3 "O Adam , see this esh ! How different the flame and heat thereof are from the Gan (garden) of delights and the good things in it!
4 "When thou wast under My control, all creatures yielded to thee; but after thou hast transgressed My mitzvah (commandment), they all rise over thee."
5 Again said Elohim unto him, "See, O Adam , how Satan has exalted thee! He has deprived thee of the Godhead, and of an exalted state like unto Me, and has not kept his word to thee; but, after all, is become thy foe. It is he who made this esh in which he meant to burn thee and Chawah (Eve).
6 "Why, O Adam , has he not kept his agreement with thee, not even one yom (day); but has deprived thee of the glory that was on thee—when thou didst yield to his command?
7 "Thinkest thou, Adam , that he loved thee when he made this agreement with thee? Or, that he loved thee and wished to raise thee on high?
8 "But no, Adam , he did not do all that out of love to thee; but he wished to make thee come out of ohr (light) into darkness, and from an exalted state to degradation; from glory to abasement; from joy to sorrow; and from rest to fasting and fainting."
9 Elohim said also to Adam , "See this esh kindled by Satan around thy me'arah ; see this wonder that surrounds thee; and know that it will encompass about both thee and thy zera (seed), when ye hearken to his behest; that he will plague you with esh ; and that ye shall go down into Sheol (hell) after ye are dead.
10 "Then shall ye see the burning of his esh , that will thus be burning around you and your zera . There shall be no deliverance from it for you, but at My coming; in like manner as thou canst not now go into thy me'arah , by reason of the great esh around it; not until My Davar shall come that will make a way for thee on the yom My berit (covenant) is fulfilled.
11 "There is no way for thee at present to come from hence to rest, not until My Davar comes, who is My Davar . Then will He make a way for thee, and thou shalt have rest." Then Elohim called with His Davar to that esh that burned around the me'arah , that it part itself asunder, until Adam had gone through it. Then the esh parted itself by Elohim 's order, and a way was made for Adam.
12 And Elohim withdrew His Davar from Adam .

Chapter 46 "How Many Times Have I Delivered Thee Out of His Hand ..."

1 Then Adam and Chawah (Eve) began again to come into the me'arah (cave). And when they came to the way between the esh (fire), Satan blew into the esh like a whirlwind, and made on Adam and Chawah a burning coal-fire; so that their bodies were singed; and the coal-fire scorched them.
2 And from the burning of the esh Adam and Chawah cried aloud, and said, "O Yahuah (Lord), save us! Leave us not to be consumed and plagued by this burning esh ; neither require us for having transgressed Thy mitzvah (commandment)."
3 Then Elohim (God) looked upon their bodies, on which Satan had caused esh to burn, and Elohim sent His malach (angel) that stayed the burning esh . But the wounds remained on their bodies.
4 And Elohim said unto Adam , "See Satan 's love for thee, who pretended to give thee the Godhead and greatness; and, behold, he burns thee with esh , and seeks to destroy thee from off the earth.
5 "Then look at Me, O Adam ; I created thee, and how many times have I delivered thee out of his hand? If not, would he not have destroyed thee?"
6 Elohim said again to Chawah , "What is that he promised thee in the Gan (Garden), saying, 'At the time ye shall eat of the tree, your eyes will be opened, and you shall become like gods, knowing good and evil.' But lo! He has burnt your bodies with esh , and has made you taste the taste of esh , for the taste of the Gan ; and has made you see the burning of esh , and the evil thereof, and the power it has over you.
7 "Your eyes have seen the good he has taken from you, and in truth he has opened your eyes; and you have seen the Gan in which ye were with Me, and ye have also seen the evil that has come upon you from Satan . But as to the Godhead, he cannot give it to you, neither fulfil his speech to you. Nay, he was bitter against you and your zera (seed), that will come after you."
8 And Elohim withdrew His Davar (Word) from them.

Chapter 47 The Devil's Own Scheming

1 Then Adam and Chawah (Eve) came into the me'arah (cave), yet trembling at the esh (fire) that had scorched their bodies. So Adam said to Chawah :—
2 "Lo, the esh has burnt our flesh in this world; but how will it be when we are dead, and Satan shall punish our souls? Is not our deliverance long and far off, unless Elohim (God) come, and in mercy to us, fulfill His promise?"
3 Then Adam and Chawah passed into the me'arah , blessing themselves for coming into it once more. For it was in their thoughts, that they never should enter it, when they saw the esh around it.
4 But as the shemesh (sun) was setting, the esh was still burning and nearing Adam and Chawah in the me'arah , so that they could not sleep in it. After the shemesh had set, they went out of it. This was the forty-seventh yom (day) after they came out of the Gan (Garden).
5 Adam and Chawah then came under the top of hill by the Gan to sleep, as they were wont.
6 And they stood and prayed Elohim to forgive them their sins, and then fell asleep under the summit of the mountain.
7 But Satan , the hater of all good, thought within himself: Whereas Elohim has promised salvation to Adam by berit (covenant), and that He would deliver him out of all the hardships that have befallen him—but has not promised me by berit , and will not deliver me out of my hardships; nay, since He has promised him that He should make him and his zera (seed) dwell in the Malkut (kingdom) in which I once was—I will kill Adam .
8 The earth shall be rid of him; and shall be left to me alone; so that when he is dead he may not have any zera left to inherit the Malkut that shall remain my own realm; Elohim will then be in want of me, and He will restore me to it with my hosts.

Chapter 48 Fifth Apparition of Satan to Adam and Eve

1 After this, Satan called to his hosts, all of which came to him, and said unto him: —
2 "O, our lord, what wilt thou do?"
3 He then said unto them, "Ye know that this Adam, whom Elohim (God) created out of the dust, is he who has taken our kingdom. Come, let us gather together and kill him; or hurl a rock at him and at Chawah (Eve), and crush them under it."
4 When Satan 's hosts heard these words, they came to the part of the mountain where Adam and Chawah were asleep.
5 Then Satan and his hosts took a huge rock, broad and even, and without blemish, thinking within himself, "If there should be a hole in the rock, when it fell on them, the hole in the rock might come upon them, and so they would escape and not die."
6 He then said to his hosts, "Take up this stone, and throw it flat upon them, so that it roll not from them to somewhere else. And when ye have hurled it, flee and tarry not."
7 And they did as he bid them. But as the rock fell down from the mountain upon Adam and Chawah , Elohim commanded it to become a kind of shed over them; that did them no harm. And so it was by Elohim 's order.
8 But when the rock fell, the whole earth quaked with it, and was shaken from the size of the rock.
9 And as it quaked and shook, Adam and Chawah awoke from sleep, and found themselves under a rock like a shed. But they knew not how it was; for when they fell asleep they were under the sky, and not under a shed, and when they saw it, they were afraid.
10 Then Adam said to Chawah , "Wherefore has the mountain bent itself, and the earth quaked and shaken on our account? And why has this rock spread itself over us like a tent?
11 "Does Elohim intend to plague us and to shut us up in this prison? Or will He close the earth upon us?
12 "He is angry with us for our having come out of the me'arah (cave) without His order; and for our having done so of our own accord, without consulting Him, when we left the me'arah and came to this place."
13 Then Chawah said, "If, indeed, the earth quaked for our sake, and this rock forms a tent over us because of our transgression, then woe be to us, O Adam, for our punishment will be long.
14 "But arise and pray to Elohim to let us know concerning this, and what this rock is, that is spread over us like a tent."
15 Then Adam stood up and prayed before Yahuah (the Lord), to let him know about this strait. And Adam thus stood praying until the morning.

Chapter 49 The First Prophecy of the Resurrection

1 Then the Davar Elohim (Word of God) came and said:—
2 "O Adam , who counselled thee, when thou camest out of the me'arah (cave), to come to this place?"
3 And Adam said unto Elohim (God), "O Yahuah (Lord), we came to this place because of the heat of the esh (fire), that came upon us inside the me'arah ."
4 Then Yahuah Elohim said unto Adam , "O Adam , thou dreadest the heat of esh for one lailah (night), but how will it be when thou dwellest in Sheol (hell)?
5 "Yet, O Adam , fear not, neither say in thy heart that I have spread this rock as an awning over thee, to plague thee therewith.
6 "It came from Satan , who had promised thee the Godhead and majesty. It is he who threw down this rock to kill thee under it, and Chawah (Eve) with thee, and thus to prevent you from living upon the earth.
7 "But, in mercy for you, just as that rock was falling down upon you, I commanded it to form an awning over you; and the rock under you, to lower itself.
8 "And this sign, O Adam , will happen to Me at My coming upon earth: Satan will raise the people of the Yehudim (Jews/Hebrews) and put Me to death; and they will lay Me in a rock, and seal a large stone upon Me, and I shall remain within that rock three yamim (days) and three leilot (nights).
9 "But on the third yom (day) I shall rise again, and it shall be salvation to thee, O Adam , and to thy zera (seed), to believe in Me. But, O Adam , I will not bring thee from under this rock until three yamim and three leilot are passed."
10 And Elohim withdrew His Davar from Adam .
11 But Adam and Chawah abode under the rock three yamim and three leilot , as Elohim had told them.
12 And Elohim did so to them because they had left their me'arah and had come to this same place without Elohim 's order.
13 But, after three yamim and three leilot , Elohim opened the rock and brought them out from under it. Their basar (flesh) was dried up, and their eyes and their hearts were troubled from weeping and sorrow.

Chapter 50 Adam and Chawah Seek to Cover Their Nakedness; They Pray in the Me'arah; The Davar Elohim Sends Them to the Seashore for Sheep Skins as a Remez of the Covering of the Mashiach

1 Then Adam and Chawah (Eve) went forth and came into the Me'arat haOtzrot (Cave of Treasures) , and they stood praying in it the whole of that yom (day) , until the erev (evening) . Their tefillah (prayer) was without ceasing, for the shame of their nakedness was heavy upon them.
2 And this took place at the end of fifty yamim (days) after they had left the Gan (garden) , according to the measure of the days of their exile.
3 But Adam and Chawah rose again and prayed to Elohim (God) in the me'arah (cave) the whole of that lailah (night) , and begged for rachamim (mercy) from Him. They cried, "O Yahuah (the Lord) , look upon our affliction, and provide a covering for the shame of Thy servants, that we be not utterly consumed."
4 And when the day dawned, Adam said unto Chawah , "Come! Let us go and do some work for our bodies, for we are naked in the sight of shamayim (heaven) and adamah (earth) , and the basar (flesh) requires a garment."
5 So they went out of the me'arah , and came to the northern gevul (border) of the Gan , and they sought something to cover their bodies withal. But they found nothing, and knew not how to do the work, for the wisdom of the Gan had departed. Yet their bodies were stained with the dust of the ground, and they were speechless from kor (cold) and chom (heat) , suffering the curse of the adamah .
6 Then Adam stood and asked Elohim to show him something wherewith to cover their bodies, saying, "O Elohim , my Creator, the or (light) of my ketonet (garment) is gone; give me now a covering from the mavet (death) that has entered the world, a sign of the Mashiach (Messiah) who shall clothe us with kavod (glory) ."
7 Then came the Davar Elohim (Word of God) and said unto him, "O Adam , take Chawah and come to the seashore , where ye fasted before, at the edge of the yam (sea) . There ye shall find skins of sheep, whose basar (flesh) was devoured by arayot (lions) , and whose skins were left. Take them and make raiment for yourselves, and clothe yourselves withal. And know that this is a remez (hint) : for in the fullness of zman (time) , the Seh haElohim (Lamb of God) shall be slain from the foundation of the world, and by His dam (blood) shall your nakedness be covered, and you shall be clothed with the kesut yeshuah (garment of salvation) and the me'il tzedakah (robe of righteousness) , even the righteousness of the Mashiach who is to come."

Chapter 51 "What is His Beauty That You Should Have Followed Him?"; The Davar Elohim Binds Satan by the Skins; Adam and Chawah Behold His Hideous Form

1 When Adam heard these words from Elohim (God) , he took Chawah (Eve) and removed from the northern end of the Gan (garden) to the south of it, by the river of mayim (water) , where they once fasted and offered tefillah (prayer) in the early days of their exile.
2 But as they were going in the way, and before they reached that place, Satan ha-Mastemah (Satan the Accuser) , the wicked one, had heard the Davar Elohim (Word of God) communing with Adam respecting his covering.
3 It grieved him, and he hastened to the place where the sheep-skins were, with the intention of taking them and throwing them into the yam (sea) , or of burning them with esh (fire) , so that Adam and Chawah should not find them and be covered.
4 But as he was about to take them, the Davar Elohim came from shamayim (heaven) , and bound him by the side of those skins until Adam and Chawah came near him. But as they neared him they were afraid of him, and of his hideous look, for his panim (face) was full of darkness and his form was as a shadow of mavet (death) .
5 Then came the Davar Elohim to Adam and Chawah , and said unto them, "This is he who was hidden in the nachash (serpent) , and who deceived you with smooth words, and stripped you of the ketonet or (garment of light) and kavod (glory) in which you were clothed.
6 "This is he who promised you gedulah (majesty) and teva Elohi (divinity) , saying, 'Ye shall be as Elohim , knowing good and evil.' Where, then, is the beauty that was on him? Where is his divinity? Where is his light? Where is the glory that rested upon him? All is become a lie and a desolation.
7 "Now his figure is hideous; he is become abominable among the malachim (angels) ; and he has come to be called Satan , the adversary, and ha-Mastemah , the accuser of the brethren.
8 "O Adam , he wished to take from you this earthly garment of sheep-skins, and to destroy it with fire, and not let you be covered with it, that your shame might remain upon you all the yamim (days) of your sojourning.
9 "What, then, is his beauty that you should have followed him? And what have you gained by hearkening unto his voice? See his evil works and then look at Me; at Me, your Borei (Creator) , and at the good deeds I do you, even covering your nakedness as a remez (hint) of the Mashiach (Messiah) who shall cover your chattot (sins) with His dam (blood) .
10 "See, I bound him until you came and saw him and beheld his weakness, that no koach (power) is left with him against those who cleave to the Shem (Name) of the coming Go'el (Redeemer) . The Mashiach shall bruise his head, and he shall be cast into the tehom (abyss) forever."
11 And Elohim released Satan from his bonds, and the adversary fled howling into the waste places, ashamed and confounded before the b'nei Adam (children of man) whom he had sought to destroy.

Chapter 52 Adam and Chawah Prepare the First Garments from Skins; A Malach Shows Them the Craft; They Give Thanks and Go Forth Toward the Western Border

1 After this, Adam and Chawah (Eve) said no more, but wept before Elohim (God) on account of their creation, and of their bodies that required an earthly covering, for the or (light) of their innocence had departed, and they knew that they were naked.
2 Then Adam said unto Chawah , "O Chawah , this is the or (skin) of beasts with which we shall be covered. But when we have put it on, behold, a token of mavet (death) shall have come upon us, inasmuch as the owners of these skins have died, and have wasted away. So also shall we die, and pass away, unless the Mashiach (Messiah) come to restore the chayim (life) that was lost."
3 Then Adam and Chawah took the skins, and went back to the Me'arat haOtzrot (Cave of Treasures) ; and when in it, they stood and prayed as they were wont, lifting up their hands toward shamayim (heaven) .
4 And they thought how they could make garments of those skins; for they had no skill for it, never having known such work in the Gan (garden) .
5 Then Elohim sent to them His malach (angel) to show them how to work it out. And the malach said to Adam , "Go forth, and bring some kotsim (palm-thorns) ." Then Adam went out, and brought some, as the malach had commanded him.
6 Then the malach began before them to work out the skins, after the manner of one who prepares a ketonet (shirt) . And he took the thorns and stuck them into the skins, before their eyes, as a remez (hint) that the Mashiach would one day be pierced with thorns for the chattot (sins) of the olam (world) .
7 Then the malach again stood up and prayed to Elohim that the thorns in those skins should be hidden, so as to be, as it were, sewn with one thread, leaving no mark of shame.
8 And so it was, by the order of Elohim ; they became garments for Adam and Chawah , and He clothed them withal, covering their ervah (nakedness) which had been exposed by the chet (sin) .
9 From that time the nakedness of their bodies was covered from the sight of each other's eyes, and they understood that Elohim had provided a covering, even as the dam (blood) of the Mashiach would cover the shame of their descendants.
10 And this happened at the end of the fifty-first yom (day) since they had come forth from the Gan .
11 Then when Adam 's and Chawah 's bodies were covered, they stood and prayed, and sought rachamim (mercy) of Yahuah (the Lord) , and selichah (forgiveness) , and gave Him todah (thanks) for that He had had mercy on them, and had covered their nakedness. And they ceased not from tefillah (prayer) the whole of that lailah (night) .
12 Then, when the boker (morning) dawned at the rising of the shemesh (sun) , they said their prayers after their minhag (custom) ; and then went out of the me'arah .
13 And Adam said unto Chawah , "Since we know not what there is to the westward of this me'arah , let us go forth and see it this day." Then they came forth and went towards the western gevul (border) , not knowing what awaited them there.

Chapter 53 The Prophecy of the Western Lands; Satan Appears as Two Lions; The Davar Elohim Reveals the Mabul and the Remnant of the Righteous

1 They were not very far from the me'arah (cave) , when Satan ha-Mastemah (Satan the Accuser) came towards them, and hid himself between them and the me'arah , under the form of two ravenous arayot (lions) , three yamim (days) without food, that came towards Adam and Chawah (Eve) , as if to break them in pieces and devour them.
2 Then Adam and Chawah wept, and prayed to Elohim (God) , saying, "O Yahuah (the Lord) , deliver us from their paws, for the Mashiach (Messiah) is not yet come to shut the mouths of the lions. In the Shem (Name) of the promised zera (seed) , save us!"
3 Then the Davar Elohim (Word of God) came to them, and drove away the arayot from them, and the beasts fled as chaff before the ruach (wind) .
4 And Elohim said unto Adam , "O Adam , what seekest thou on the western gevul (border) ? And why hast thou left of thine own accord the eastern gevul , in which was thy dwelling-place, the me'arah of treasures that I appointed for thy sojourning?
5 "Now, then, turn back to thy me'arah , and remain in it, that Satan do not deceive thee, nor work his purpose upon thee. For the adversary walketh about as a roaring aryeh (lion) , seeking whom he may devour.
6 "For in this western border, O Adam , there will go from thee a zera , that shall replenish it; and that zera will defile themselves with their chattot (sins) , and with their yielding to the behests of Satan , and by following his works, even as thou didst in the Gan (garden) .
7 "Therefore will I bring upon them the mei hamabul (waters of the flood) , and overwhelm them all. But I will deliver what is left of the tzaddikim (righteous) among them; and I will bring them to a distant eretz (land) , and the land in which thou dwellest now shall remain desolate and without one inhabitant in it. Yet even in that judgment, the Mashiach shall be foreshadowed, for the tevah (ark) shall be a type of the Yeshuah (Salvation) that is to come, and the brit (covenant) of the rainbow shall speak of peace between shamayim (heaven) and adamah (earth) ."
8 After Elohim had thus discoursed to them, they went back to the Me'arat haOtzrot (Cave of Treasures) . But their basar (flesh) was dried up, and their strength failed from tzom (fasting) and tefillah (praying) , and from the yagon (sorrow) they felt at having trespassed against Elohim . Yet the Davar of promise sustained their neshamot (souls) , for they knew that the Mashiach would arise from the zera of the woman to crush the head of the nachash (serpent) and to bring ge'ulah (redemption) to all who trust in His Shem .

Chapter 54 Adam and Chawah Go Forth Exploring and Approach the Borders of the Gan; The Keruv with the Flaming Cherev Appears; The Malachim are Divided Between Simchah and Sorrow

1 Then Adam and Chawah (Eve) stood up in the me'arah (cave) of treasures and prayed the whole of that lailah (night) until the boker (morning) dawned. And when the shemesh (sun) was risen they both went out of the me'arah ; their heads were wandering from the heaviness of yagon (sorrow) , and they knew not whither they went.
2 And they walked thus, their feet stumbling upon the adamah (earth) , unto the southern gevul (border) of the Gan (garden) . And they began to go up along that border until they came to the eastern gevul , beyond which there was no farther space, for the Gan was enclosed by the decree of Elohim (God) .
3 And the Keruv (Cherub) who guarded the Gan was standing at the western sha'ar (gate) , and guarding it against Adam and Chawah , lest they should suddenly come into the Gan . And the Keruv turned round, as if to put them to death, according to the mitzvah (commandment) that Elohim had given him.
4 When Adam and Chawah came to the eastern gevul of the Gan —thinking in their levavot (hearts) that the Keruv was not watching—as they were standing by the sha'ar as if wishing to go in, suddenly came the Keruv with a flashing cherev (sword) of esh (fire) in his hand; and when he saw them, he went forth to kill them. For he was afraid lest Elohim should destroy him if they went into the Gan without His order.
5 And the cherev of the Keruv seemed to flame afar off, a terror to all basar (flesh) . But when he raised it over Adam and Chawah , the flame thereof did not flash forth, for the yad (hand) of Elohim restrained the esh .
6 Therefore did the Keruv think that Elohim was favourable to them, and was bringing them back into the Gan in the day of the brit (covenant) . And the Keruv stood wondering, and his lev (heart) was perplexed.
7 He could not go up to Shamayim (Heaven) to ascertain the order of Elohim regarding their getting into the Gan ; he therefore abode standing by them, unable as he was to part from them; for he was afraid lest they should enter the Gan without leave from Elohim , who then would destroy him. So he waited, trembling before the Kisei HaKavod (Throne of Glory) .
8 When Adam and Chawah saw the Keruv coming towards them with a flaming cherev of esh in his hand, they fell on their faces from pachad (fear) , and were as dead, for the terror of the malach (angel) was upon them.
9 At that time the shamayim and the adamah shook; and other Keruvim came down from shamayim to the Keruv who guarded the Gan , and saw him amazed and silent, his cherev still lifted but no flame proceeding forth.
10 Then, again, other malachim (angels) came down nigh unto the place where Adam and Chawah were lying as dead. And they were divided between simchah (joy) and yagon .
11 They were glad, because they thought that Elohim was favourable to Adam , and wished him to return to the Gan ; and wished to restore him to the simchah he once enjoyed before the chet (sin) entered the world.
12 But they sorrowed over Adam , because he was fallen like a dead man, he and Chawah ; and they said in their thoughts, " Adam has not died in this place; but Elohim has put him to death, for his having come to this place, and wishing to get into the Gan without His leave. Yet where is the havtachah (promise) of the Mashiach (Messiah) , the zera (seed) of the woman, who shall bruise the head of the nachash (serpent) and open the gates of the Gan ? For without the dam (blood) of the Brit Chadashah (New Covenant) , no basar shall enter in."

Chapter 55 The Conflict of Satan; Adam and Chawah Confess Their Misery; The Malachim Reveal the Fall of the Adversary and Plead for Rachamim Until the Fulfillment of the Brit

1 Then came the Davar Elohim (Word of God) to Adam and Chawah (Eve) , and raised them from their state as ones dead, saying unto them, "Why came ye up hither? Do ye intend to enter again into the Gan (garden) from which I brought you out? It cannot be today, but only when the Brit (covenant) I have made with you is fulfilled in the zera (seed) of the woman, the Mashiach (Messiah) , whose dam (blood) shall open the way to the Etz Chayim (Tree of Life) ."
2 Then Adam , when he heard the Davar Elohim , and the fluttering of the malachim (angels) whom he did not see with his eyes of basar (flesh) , but only heard the sound of them in his ears, he and Chawah wept, and said to the malachim :
3 "O Ruchot (Spirits) , who wait upon Elohim (God) without ceasing, look upon me, and upon my being unable to see you! For when I was in my former bright or (light) —the kavod (glory) that clothed me before the chet (sin) —then I could see you with unveiled eyes. I sang tehillim (praises) as you do; and my lev (heart) was far above you, for I was made in the tzelem (image) of Elohim .
4 "But now, that I have transgressed the mitzvah (commandment) , that bright or is gone from me, and I am come to this miserable state. And now I am come to this, that I cannot see you, and you do not serve me as you were wont, for I am become basar behemi (animal flesh) , a creature of clay and tears.
5 "Yet now, O malachei Elohim (angels of God) , ask Elohim with me, to restore me to that kavod wherein I was formerly; to rescue me from this misery, and to remove from me the mishpat mavet (sentence of death) He passed upon me, for having trespassed against Him. Let the zekut (merit) of the coming Mashiach speak for me, though I am unworthy."
6 Then, when the malachim heard these words, they all grieved over him; and they cursed Satan , who had beguiled Adam , until he came from the Gan to misery, from chayim (life) to mavet (death) , from shalom (peace) to trouble, and from simchah (gladness) to a strange land.
7 Then the malachim said unto Adam , "Thou didst hearken to Satan , and didst forsake the Davar Elohim who created thee; and thou didst believe that Satan would fulfill all he had promised thee, though he is the father of lies.
8 "But now, O Adam , we will make known unto thee what came upon us through him, before his fall from shamayim (heaven) .
9 "He gathered together his hosts, and deceived them, promising them to give them a great malkut (kingdom) , a teva Elohi (divine nature) , and other promises he made them, saying, 'I will ascend above the heights of the clouds; I will be like Elyon (the Most High) .'
10 "His hosts believed that his davar (word) was true, so they yielded to him, and renounced the kavod Elohim (glory of God) , and fell from their ma'amad (station) .
11 "He then sent for us according to the orders in which we were—to come under his command, and to hearken to his vain promise. But we would not, and we took not his advice, for the yirat Yahuah (fear of the Lord) was upon us.
12 "Then after he had fought with Elohim , and had dealt forwardly with Him, he gathered together his hosts, and made war with us. And if it had not been for the gevurat Elohim (strength of God) that was with us, we could not have prevailed against him to hurl him from shamayim . But Micha'el (Michael) the Sar (Prince) and his malachim did cast him down.
13 "But when he fell from among us, there was great simchah in shamayim , because of his going down from us. For had he continued in shamayim , nothing—not even one malach —would have remained in it, so great was his deception.
14 "But Elohim , in His rachamim (mercy) , drove him from among us to this dark adamah (earth) ; for he had become choshech (darkness) itself and a worker of avlah (unrighteousness) .
15 "And he has continued, O Adam , to make milchamah (war) against thee, until he beguiled thee and made thee come out of the Gan , to this strange land, where all these nisyonot (trials) have come to thee. And mavet , which Elohim brought upon him, he has also brought to thee, O Adam , because thou didst obey him, and didst transgress against Elohim . Yet the Mashiach who is to come shall taste mavet for thee, and by His stripes thou shalt be healed."
16 Then the malachim rejoiced and praised Elohim , and asked Him not to destroy Adam this time, for his having sought to enter the Gan ; but to bear with him until the fulfillment of the havtachah (promise) ; and to sustain him in this olam (world) until he was free from the hand of Satan , through the Yeshuah (Salvation) that should come in the last days.

Chapter 56 A Chapter of Divine Comfort; The Davar Elohim Speaks Tenderly to Adam; The Malachim Bear Them to the Me'arah with Shirim; Satan Returns with Shamefacedness

1 Then came the Davar Elohim (Word of God) to Adam , and said unto him with a voice not of thunder but of tender rachamim (mercy) :
2 "O Adam , look now upon that Gan (garden) of simchah (joy) and upon this adamah (earth) of amal (toil) , and behold the malachim (angels) who are in the Gan —it is full of them, and they serve Elohim (God) with gladness—and see thyself alone upon this earth, with Satan whom thou didst obey when thou hearkenedst not to My mitzvah (commandment) .
3 "Yet, if thou hadst submitted, and been obedient to Me, and hadst kept My Davar , thou wouldst be even now with My malachim in My Gan , and the Etz Chayim (Tree of Life) would have been thy food, and the Shechinah (Divine Presence) would have dwelt with thee continually.
4 "But when thou didst transgress and hearken unto Satan , thou didst become his guest among his malachim that are full of risha (wickedness) ; and thou camest to this earth, that brings forth unto thee kotzim (thorns) and dardarim (thistles) , and thou dost eat thy lechem (bread) in the sweat of thy brow.
5 "O Adam , ask him who deceived thee, to give thee the teva Elohi (divine nature) he promised thee; or to make thee a Gan as I had made for thee; or to fill thee with that same bright or (light) with which I had filled thee before the chet (sin) .
6 "Ask him to make thee a body like the one I made thee in the tzelem (image) of Elohim ; or to give thee a yom menuchah (day of rest) as I gave thee, the Shabbat (Sabbath) which is a sign of the Mashiach (Messiah) ; or to create within thee a nefesh sichlit (reasonable soul) , as I did create for thee when I breathed into thy nostrils the nishmat chayim (breath of life) . But, O Adam , he will not fulfill even one of the things he told thee, for there is no emet (truth) in him.
7 "Acknowledge, then, My chen (favour) toward thee, and My rachamim on thee, My creature; that I have not requited thee according to thy pesha (transgression) against Me, but in My pity for thee I have promised thee that at the end of the great chamishah yamim vachetzi (five days and a half) —which is the mystery of the age before the Mashiach —I will come and save thee through the Ben David (Son of David) , whose dam (blood) shall speak peace to the adamah ."
8 Then Elohim said again to Adam and Chawah (Eve) , "Arise, go down from hence, lest the Keruv (Cherub) with a sword of esh (fire) in his hand destroy you, for this place is still holy and you dwell yet in your basar (flesh) ."
9 But Adam 's lev (heart) was comforted by the words of Elohim to him, and the teshuvah (repentance) that had been as wormwood was turned to hope, and he bowed himself and worshipped before Yahuah (the Lord) .
10 And Elohim commanded His malachim to escort Adam and Chawah to the me'arah (cave) of treasures with simchah (joy) , instead of the pachad (fear) that had come upon them when they saw the flaming sword.
11 Then the malachim took up Adam and Chawah , and brought them down from the mountain by the Gan , with shirim (songs) and tehillim (psalms) , singing, " Hodu l'Yahuah ki tov, ki l'olam chasdo —Give thanks unto Yahuah for He is good, for His chesed (lovingkindness) endureth forever." And they comforted and strengthened them with words concerning the Mashiach , and then departed from them toward shamayim (heaven) , to their Creator who had sent them.
12 But, after the malachim were gone from Adam and Chawah , behold, Satan came with shamefacedness, his pride brought low for a moment, and he stood at the entrance of the me'arah in which were Adam and Chawah . He then called unto Adam , and said, "O Adam , come, let me speak unto thee."
13 Then Adam came out of the me'arah , thinking that it was one of the malachim of Elohim who had returned to give him some good counsel; for he did not perceive the wiles of the adversary who comes as a wolf in sheep's clothing. But Elohim , who watches over the humble, would yet deliver him from the snare, as it is written in the chapter that follows.

Chapter 57 Satan Reveals His Deception and Boasts of His Dominion; Adam Cries Out to Elohim for Deliverance Through the Mashiach

1 But when Adam came out of the me'arah (cave) and saw the hideous figure of the adversary, he was afraid, and he said, "Who art thou, that thou shouldst appear before me in this form of terror?"
2 Then Satan ha-Mastemah (Satan the Accuser) answered him and said, "It is I, who hid myself within the nachash (serpent) in the Gan (garden) , who spoke to Chawah (Eve) with smooth words and beguiled her, until she hearkened to my voice and transgressed the mitzvah (commandment) of Elohim (God) . I am he who sent her, through the wiles of my speech, to deceive thee, until thou and she ate of the p'ri (fruit) of the Etz HaDa'at (Tree of Knowledge) , and ye departed from under the memshalah (dominion) of Elohim ."
3 When Adam heard these words, his spirit burned within him, and he said, "Canst thou make me a Gan as Elohim made for me? Or canst thou clothe me again in that or (light) and that kavod (glory) with which Elohim had clothed me before the avon (iniquity) ?
4 "Where is the teva Elohi (divine nature) thou didst promise to give me? Where is that fair speech of thine, those words smoother than oil, which thou didst speak to us at first, when we were yet in the Gan and knew not thy treachery?"
5 Then Satan answered with a laugh full of bitterness, and he said, "Thinkest thou, O Adam , that when I have spoken to one about any matter, I shall ever bring it to pass or fulfill my word? Not so. For I myself have never even desired to obtain that which I ask, nor have I purposed to give that which I promise. Emet (truth) is not in me, for I am a liar and the father of lies.
6 "Therefore did I fall from my ma'amad (station) in shamayim (heaven) , and therefore did I make you fall by the very same chet (sin) by which I myself fell: the pride that desires to be as Elohim . And with you also, whosoever shall accept my counsel and walk in my ways shall fall thereby, and their end shall be as my end.
7 "But now, O Adam , by reason of thy fall thou art under my memshalah , and I am melech (king) over thee and over all who are born of the basar (flesh) in avon ; because thou hast hearkened unto me and hast transgressed against Eloheicha (thy God) . Neither shall there be any hatzalah (deliverance) from my hands until the yom (day) promised thee by Elohim —the day of the zera (seed) of the woman who shall bruise my head. But until that day, thou art mine."
8 And he continued, saying, "Inasmuch as we—I and my malachim of darkness—do not know the yom agreed upon with thee by thy Elohim , nor the sha'ah (hour) in which thou shalt be delivered, for that reason will we multiply milchamah (war) and ratzach (murder) upon thee and upon thy zera after thee. We shall sow hatred among thy children, and the dam (blood) of the righteous shall cry out from the adamah (earth) ."
9 "This is our will and our good pleasure, that we may not leave one of the b'nei Adam (children of man) to inherit our orders in shamayim , for we have lost our nachalah (inheritance) , and we burn with envy against those upon whom Elohim has set His ahavah (love) ."
10 "For as to our moshav (abode) , O Adam , it is in esh bo'eret (burning fire) , and we shall not cease our ra'ah (evil) , not for one yom nor for one sha'ah . And I, O Adam , shall sow esh upon thee when thou comest into the me'arah to dwell there, and I shall afflict thee with terrors by night and with arrows by day, for such is the hatred of the fallen."
11 When Adam heard these words, he wept and mourned with a great mourning, and he said unto Chawah , "Hear what he hath said; that he will not fulfill aught of what he told thee in the Gan . Did he truly then become melech over us, that he should boast with such pride? But I remember the brit (covenant) of Elohim , that the Mashiach (Messiah) shall come and break the yoke of the adversary.
12 "But we will ask Elohim , who created us for His kavod , to deliver us out of his hands, not by our own strength, but by the zero'a (arm) of Yahuah (the Lord) and by the dam of the Seh haElohim (Lamb of God) who is to be slain from the foundation of the world. For if the Mashiach be for us, who can be against us? Let us return to the me'arah and pour out our tefillah (prayer) until the Yeshuah (Salvation) of Elohim is revealed."

Chapter 58 Adam and Chawah Enter the Me'arah and Offer Tefillah for Forty Days; The Fire of the Ruach Descends upon Their Qorban of Tefillah, and Satan is Driven Away

1 Then Adam and Chawah (Eve) , seeing yet again the wiles of Satan ha-Mastemah (Satan the Accuser) and feeling the shadow of his terror near, spread forth their hands unto Elohim (God) , offering tefillah (prayer) and tachanunim (supplications) , and they cried, "O Yahuah (the Lord) , drive this adversary from us, that he may do us no violence, and that he may not force our lips to deny Thy Shem Kadosh (Holy Name) , for the Mashiach (Messiah) is not yet come to bind the strong man. In the dam (blood) of the brit chadashah (new covenant) which shall be shed, we seek refuge."
2 Then Elohim , whose rachamim (mercy) is upon the work of His hands for the sake of the promised zera (seed) , sent at once His malach (angel) , even Micha'el (Michael) the Sar (Prince) , who descended with a sword of flame and a countenance like lightning. And Micha'el drove Satan away from them, and the adversary fled howling into the waste places. This happened about sunset, on the fifty-third yom (day) after they had come out of the Gan (Garden) .
3 Then Adam and Chawah entered into the me'arah (cave) of treasures, and they stood up and turned their faces toward the adamah (earth) , for they were ashamed to lift their eyes to shamayim (heaven) . And they prayed to Elohim with a broken lev (heart) and a contrite ruach (spirit) , confessing their chattot (sins) and pleading the brit (covenant) of the Go'el (Redeemer) .
4 And while they were yet praying, Adam said unto Chawah , "Lo, thou hast seen what temptations have befallen us in this land of exile; the adversary has come to us as a malach or (angel of light) and as an ishah yefat mar'eh (beautiful woman) , and the yetzer hara (evil inclination) has been stirred up. Come, let us arise, and let us do teshuvah (repentance) with all our nefesh (soul) . Let us ask Elohim to forgive us the avonot (iniquities) we have committed, and we will not come out of this me'arah until the end of the yom next to the fortieth. And if we die herein, He will save us through the Mashiach whose dam shall speak a better word than the dam of Hevel (Abel)."
5 Then Adam and Chawah arose, and they joined together in entreating Elohim . They fasted and wept, and their tefillah was as incense before the Kisei HaKavod (Throne of Glory) . They ate no lechem (bread) and drank no mayim (water) , but their souls nourished themselves on the hope of the coming Yeshuah (Salvation) .
6 They abode thus praying in the me'arah ; neither did they come out of it, by night or by yom , until their tefillot (prayers) went up out of their mouths like a flame of esh (fire) , a qorban (offering) acceptable before Yahuah . And the Ruach HaKodesh (Holy Spirit) brooded over that esh , and it was a token of the esh which shall fall upon the mizbeach (altar) in the day of the Mashiach , who is the Olah (Burnt Offering) for all the chattot of the b'nei Adam (children of man) .

Chapter 59 Adam and Chawah Go Forth to the Mayim to Wash and to Offer Tefillah; Satan Appears as a Malach Or Offering Secret Knowledge; They Overcome Through Tefillah and the Davar, and the Adversary is Vanquished

1 And it came to pass in the cool of the day, that Adam and Chawah (Eve) , who dwelt still in the me'arah (cave) of treasures, said one to another, "Let us go forth to the mayim (waters) of the river, for our nefesh (soul) is parched, and we have not yet lifted up our hands in tefillah (prayer) this day. Let us wash away the dust of the adamah (earth) and remember the brit (covenant) of Elohim (God) ."
2 So they arose and walked to the bank of the river that flowed from the borders of the lost Gan (garden) . And they knelt by the mayim , and the sound of the stream was as a shir (song) of mourning.
3 Now when Satan ha-Mastemah (Satan the Accuser) beheld them, he burned with envy exceeding great. He said, "These creatures of clay yet seek the face of Yahuah (the Lord) ! I will go and deceive them with a new snare, for I know the desire of their hearts is for knowledge and for a return to the or (light) they have lost."
4 So Satan transformed himself into the likeness of a malach or (angel of light) , glorious to behold, with wings that spread like the dawn and a countenance that shone with a cold, false fire. In his hand he carried a scroll that gleamed as if written with stars, and he stood on the opposite bank of the river and called out to them.
5 " Shalom aleichem , O Adam and Chawah ," he said, and his voice was as the rushing of many waters. "I have been sent from the Kisei HaKavod (Throne of Glory) with a sod (secret) that has been hidden from the foundation of the world. Elohim has seen your tears, and He has given me leave to reveal to you the path of the etz hada'at (tree of knowledge) , that you may become as Elohim in wisdom and power, and by this wisdom open the gates of the Gan yourselves. Only bow down to me and receive this scroll, and your eyes shall be opened afresh."
6 And Chawah looked upon the shining malach and upon the scroll that promised wisdom, and her heart's old wound ached. She said to Adam , "My lord, if this is true, we might undo the evil we have done. What harm is in hearing the words of one who comes in light?"
7 But the Ruach HaKodesh (Holy Spirit) , who is the Comforter, whispered into Adam 's spirit, and he remembered the davar (word) of the Mashiach (Messiah) which was spoken in promise: "The ear that is open to the stranger closes the sha'ar (gate) of the heart to Yahuah ." And Adam said to Chawah , "My sister, the nachash (serpent) also came with words of light in the Gan , and death followed. Let us not give our ears to this messenger until we have tested the spirit."
8 Then Adam lifted up his voice in tefillah , crying, " Shem Yisrael , O Yahuah Eloheinu , guard the work of Thy hands! We know that the Mashiach alone is the Chokmah (Wisdom) of Elohim , and in Him are hid all the treasures of da'at (knowledge) . If this messenger be from Thee, let him confess the coming of the Ben Elohim (Son of God) in the basar (flesh) , and let him magnify the dam (blood) of the brit chadashah (new covenant) ."
9 At this, Satan recoiled, for he could not speak of the dam of the Mashiach without confessing his own doom. The scroll in his hand burst into smoke, and his light became as lightning that shatters and is gone. He cried with a terrible voice, "I am defeated by the very Name I sought to blaspheme!" And he fled into the wilderness, where the wild beasts dwell.
10 Then Adam and Chawah fell on their faces and gave todah (thanksgiving) , and they washed in the mayim and prayed: "Blessed art Thou, O Yahuah , Melech HaOlam (King of the Universe) , who has given us the shield of tefillah and the sword of the Davar (Word) . May the Mashiach come quickly, the Sar Shalom (Prince of Peace) , to tread down the adversary under our feet."
11 And as they prayed, a true malach from the presence of Elohim , even Uri'el (Uriel) , whose name is " Or El (Light of God) ," descended and stood on the bank beside them, and the mayim sparkled with a holy radiance. He said, "Your tefillah has prevailed, and you have not been deceived by the false or . Know that the Mashiach is the true Or HaOlam (Light of the World) , and in His or you shall see light. The scroll that the enemy offered was a lie, but the Mashiach is Himself the Sefer HaChayim (Book of Life) opened, and whosoever trusts in His Shem (Name) shall be written therein."
12 Then Adam asked, "Whence comes the Mashiach , and how shall we know Him in the fullness of zman (time) ?"
13 And Uri'el answered, "He shall be born of a betulah (virgin) from your zera (seed) , and His Shem shall be called Immanu'el (God with us) . He shall be El Gibbor (Mighty God) and Avi Ad (Everlasting Father) , yet He shall be a man of sorrows, acquainted with grief. He shall bear your chattot (sins) and carry your avonot (iniquities) , and by His stripes you shall be healed. He shall die and on the third yom (day) rise again, and the Keruvim (Cherubim) shall sheathe their swords, and the way to the Etz Chayim (Tree of Life) shall be opened to all who follow Him."
14 Then Adam and Chawah wept for joy, and they sang a tehillah (praise) : "How great is Thy chesed (lovingkindness) , O Elohim , that Thou wouldst send the Mashiach to ransom captives! We will wait for Thy Yeshuah (Salvation) all the days of our sojourning on the adamah ."
15 And they returned to the me'arah , the Cave of Treasures, with shalom (peace) in their hearts, and they taught their children the sod of the Mashiach , saying, "Do not seek knowledge apart from Yahuah , for the fear of Yahuah is the beginning of chokmah . Trust in the Mashiach , who is the Davar made basar , and you shall not be put to shame."

Chapter 60 Adam and Chawah Go Forth to the Mayim Again; Satan Appears as an Ishah Yefat Mar'eh and Tempts Them; They Overcome Through Tefillah and the Shem HaMashiach, and the Adversary Flees

1 And it came to pass after these yamim (days) that Adam and Chawah (Eve), who dwelt in the me'arah (cave) of treasures, said one to another, "Let us not grow weary in the minhag (custom) of tefillah (prayer) , for the Mashiach (Messiah) is not yet come, and the way to the Etz Chayim (Tree of Life) is guarded. Come, let us go again to the mayim (waters) of the river, that we may wash and lift up our hands before Yahuah (the Lord) ."
2 So they arose and went forth from the me'arah , their garments of skin weighing heavy upon them, and their hearts were full of hope mingled with sorrow. And the adamah (earth) beneath their feet was dry and thirsty, for the kelalah (curse) had not yet been lifted.
3 Now when Satan ha-Mastemah (Satan the Accuser) saw their constancy, he gnashed his teeth and said, "I will ensnare them yet again. If they overcome me now, my dominion over the children of adam (man) shall be diminished, and the zera (seed) of the woman shall bruise my head."
4 Therefore, he took upon himself the form of an ishah yefat mar'eh (a woman of exceedingly beautiful appearance) , more lovely than any daughter of the adamah , with eyes like pools of moonlight and hair like the raven's wing. Her voice was the melody of flutes, and her garments shimmered like the scales of a fish in the sun.
5 And the ishah went down to the mayim and sat upon a stone, as if mourning; and when Adam and Chawah drew near, she lifted up her voice and wept, saying, "Woe is me! I am a stranger in this land, and I know not the way to my home."
6 Then Chawah , whose heart was tender, said to Adam , "My lord, let us comfort this woman, for she is alone and sorrowful. Perhaps Elohim (God) has sent her to test our chesed (lovingkindness) ."
7 But Adam , who had been taught by many sorrows, felt a prick in his lev (heart) , and he said, "Wait, O Chawah , for the Ruach HaKodesh (Holy Spirit) has warned us that the adversary walks in many forms. Let us first offer tefillah , that our eyes may be opened."
8 So they fell upon their faces by the river and prayed, "O Yahuah Eloheinu (Lord our God) , who knows the secrets of all hearts, give us discernment to know the voice of the stranger. If this woman be from Thee, let her speak words of emet (truth) ; but if she be of the nachash (serpent) , let her be revealed. In the Shem (Name) of the Mashiach who is to come, we seek refuge."
9 And as they prayed, the woman arose and called to them with a voice like honey, "Why do you pray to a God who has cast you out? Come to me, and I will give you rest. The Gan (garden) is forbidden to you, but there are pleasures in this land. Why should you mourn forever?"
10 Now Chawah , hearing these smooth words, felt the old yetzer hara (evil inclination) stir within her, and she said, "My lord, her words are pleasant; perchance she speaks chokmah (wisdom) ."
11 But Adam , strengthened by the tefillah , cried aloud, "Depart from us, Satan ! For it is written in the Sefer HaZikkaron (Book of Remembrance) that the Mashiach shall be the Ner Tamid (Eternal Light) , and in His or (light) , no darkness can stand. You come as an ishah , but I know you by the fruit of your lips, which is death."
12 And he took Chawah by the hand and said, "Let us wash and be clean, and let us not hearken to the voice of the deceiver."
13 Then the woman's form wavered, and her beauty became as a shroud, and the smell of decay rose from her. She screamed and fled into the wilderness, and Satan said within himself, "I am defeated this day, for the tefillah of the faithful has built a wall I cannot breach."
14 Then Adam and Chawah washed themselves in the mayim , and they offered todah (thanksgiving) to Elohim , saying, "Blessed art Thou, O Yahuah , who has not turned away our tefillah , but has given us victory over the adversary. May the Mashiach , the Ben David (Son of David) , arise quickly and trample the nachash underfoot, that we may return to the Gan and eat of the Etz Chayim ."
15 And they returned to the me'arah , and they taught their children after them, saying, "The tefillah of the righteous is a shield; the Shem of Yahuah is a strong tower. Put your trust in the Mashiach , and you shall not be moved."

Chapter 61 Adam and Chawah Establish Minhag Tefillah by the Mayim; Satan Appears as a Malach to Deceive Them and Draw Them from the Way of Teshuva; They Stand Firm in the Emunah

1 And it came to pass after these things, that Adam and Chawah (Eve), who dwelt in the me'arah (cave) of treasures, set their hearts to seek the face of Elohim (God) continually, for they said, "The way of teshuvah (repentance) is not for a single yom (day) , but for all the yamim (days) of our sojourning. If we do not cleave to tefillah (prayer), the yetzer hara (evil inclination) will overtake us as a flood."
2 So they went forth from the me'arah at dawn, when the or (light) first touches the mountains, and they walked to the mayim (waters) of the river, as was their minhag (custom), to wash and to lift up holy hands in tefillah. And the fear of Yahuah was upon them.
3 Now Satan, the adversary who walks about as a roaring lion seeking whom he may devour, saw their steadfastness, and his rage was kindled. He said, "I will appear to them in the brightness of an angel, for they have refused the form of a woman. Perchance they will be moved by the appearance of a messenger from heaven."
4 So Satan transformed himself into the likeness of a malach (angel) , not as the true malachim who stand before the Kisei HaKavod (Throne of Glory) , but as a counterfeit, a malach or (angel of light) , with a countenance that shone like burnished brass, and he stood upon the far bank of the river, and he called to them with a voice smooth as oil.
5 "Shalom Aleichem, O Adam and Chawah ," he said, "for I have been sent from the presence of Elohim with a besorah (good tidings) . The time of your exile is shortened. Come now, cross the river, and I will lead you back to the Gan (garden), for the Keruvim (Cherubim) have put away their flaming sword. Only come quickly, and do not hesitate, for the gate stands open this very hour."
6 When Adam heard the words "gate stands open," his lev (heart) leaped within him, for he longed for the Gan with a longing like the grave. But the Ruach HaKodesh (Holy Spirit), who searches all things, whispered within him and brought to remembrance the davar (word) of warning that Micha'el (Michael) had spoken: "The path to the Gan is not yet opened, for the price of redemption is not yet paid. Wait for the Mashiach (Messiah)."
7 So Adam stood still, and he took Chawah by the hand and said, "My sister, remember the deceits of the adversary. Did not a malach speak to us before, and when we sought an ot (sign) , he fled? Let us prove the words of this messenger, lest we be deceived again."
8 Then Adam lifted up his voice and said to the shining figure, "If you are truly sent from Yahuah , speak now the Shem haMeforash (the Ineffable Name) , and utter the promise of the zera (seed) of the woman which was spoken in the Gan to the nachash (serpent) . For every true malach delights to magnify the Shem of Elohim and to declare the besorah of the coming Go'el (Redeemer) ."
9 At this, Satan trembled, for he could not utter the Shem in truth, and he could not speak of the zera of the woman without confessing his own destruction. His voice, which had been smooth as oil, cracked like a potsherd, and the light that surrounded him became as a shadow, and he fled away howling into the desert places, defeated by the emunah (faith) of those who cleave to the brit (covenant) .
10 Then Adam and Chawah fell upon their faces and gave todah (thanksgiving) , and Adam prayed, "Blessed art Thou, O Yahuah , who has not removed Thy chesed (lovingkindness) from us. We are but worms and not men, yet Thou hast given us discernment to know the voice of the stranger. May the Mashiach , when He comes, perfect our emunah and trample the adversary underfoot."
11 And Chawah added her voice, "O Elohai , let the dam (blood) of the promised Lamb be a seal upon our foreheads, that the destroyer may have no power over us. Strengthen our tefillah , that it may be as incense before Thee, and let our minhag of washing in the mayim be a shadow of the mikvah (immersion) of the Ruach which the Mashiach shall bring."
12 And as they prayed, a true malach , even Gavri'el (Gabriel) , descended with a soft rustling as of wings, and he stood on the opposite bank and said, "Your tefillah is heard, and your emunah has prevailed this day. Continue in the minhag of prayer, for the Mashiach Himself, who is your strength, prayed in the days of His basar (flesh) and overcame the tempter. In Him you shall also overcome."
13 Then Adam asked, " Adonai , what is the Mashiach , that we should hope in him? How shall he be both the zera of the woman and the Davar (Word) of Elohim ?"
14 And Gavri'el answered, "It is a mystery hidden from the ages, but it shall be revealed to your children's children. The Mashiach shall be the Ben Elohim (Son of God) and the Ben Adam (Son of Man) , and His dam shall be the price of your ransom. He shall be wounded for your pesha'im (transgressions) and bruised for your avonot (iniquities) , and by His chaburah (stripes) you shall be healed. He shall go down into she'ol and break the gates of brass, and on the third day He shall arise, and those who trust in Him shall arise with Him."
15 And Adam and Chawah marveled at these words, and simchah (joy) filled their hearts, for they understood that the Gan would be restored not by their own strength, but by the Yeshuah (Salvation) of Yahuah . They prostrated themselves and blessed the Shem of Elohim .
16 Then Gavri'el departed into shamayim (heaven) , and Adam and Chawah rose and returned to the me'arah , singing a shir chadash (new song) : " Hinei El Yeshuati evtach v'lo efchad —Behold, El is my Yeshuah , I will trust and not be afraid; for Yah Yahuah is my strength and my song, and He is become my Yeshuah ."
17 And they kept this minhag of tefillah by the mayim all the days of their life, and they taught it to their children, saying, "When the Mashiach comes, He shall lead us to living mayim , and we shall wash and be clean."

Chapter 62 Adam and Chawah Go to the Mayim to Offer Tefillah; Satan Appears as an Ishah Yefat Mar'eh and Seeks to Ensnare Them with Flattery; They Overcome Through Tefillah and the Shem, and the Adversary Flees

1 And it came to pass after many yamim (days) of dwelling in the me'arah (cave) of treasures, that Adam and Chawah (Eve) , whose neshamot (souls) were still bowed down under the weight of their chattot (sins) , said one to another, "Let us go forth to the mayim (waters) of the river, that we may wash the dust of sorrow from our faces and offer tefillah (prayer) before Elohim (God) in the place where the stream flows from the Gan (garden) ."
2 So they arose early, while the or (light) of the sun was yet young upon the hills, and they took no food, for their fasting was a qorban (offering) of the broken spirit. And they walked from the me'arah toward the river, and their feet trod softly upon the adamah (earth), for the memory of the Etz HaDa'at (Tree of Knowledge) was still a thorn in their hearts.
3 Now Satan ha-Mastemah (Satan the Accuser) , the nachash (serpent) and father of lies, beheld them from his place of lurking, and his hatred burned like a furnace. He said in his proud heart, "Behold, the adam (man) and his ishah (woman) go forth to seek the face of Elohim. But I will go and meet them by the mayim, and I will ensnare their eyes with beauty and their ears with flattery, and they shall fall yet again in the way."
4 Therefore, Satan transformed himself into the likeness of an ishah yefat mar'eh (a woman of exceedingly beautiful appearance), whose beauty surpassed the fairest of the daughters of adamah. Her robes were as the hues of the sunset, her voice was as the rippling of the brook, and the scent of myrrh and frankincense was upon her garments.
5 When Adam and Chawah drew near to the mayim , they beheld the woman walking along the bank, and their eyes were struck with wonder, for they had not seen such form since the malachim (angels) of Elohim had visited them in the Gan . Yet Adam 's lev (heart) was pricked with a warning, and he said to Chawah , "Let us not go near, for I know not whether this vision is from shamayim (heaven) or from the realm of the deceiver."
6 But the ishah lifted up her voice like a harp and called to them, "Why do you stand afar off, O Adam and Chawah ? Come and behold the pleasantness of the mayim . Elohim has not created such beauty to be shunned, but to be a comfort to the weary. Let us wash together and forget the toil of your exile."
7 And Chawah , whose heart had once been pierced by the davar (word) of the nachash in the Gan , felt the old yetzer hara (evil inclination) stir within her, and she said, "My lord, the words of this woman are sweet, and her countenance is fair. Perchance Elohim has sent her to be a menuchah (comfort) to our sorrow."
8 But Adam remembered the mitzvah (commandment) of Yahuah (the Lord) , and he cried out with a loud voice, " Shema Yisrael , O my nefesh (soul) ! Hearken only to the voice of Elohim !" And he grasped Chawah 's hand and said, "Let us fall on our faces in tefillah , for this is the hour of trial."
9 Then Adam and Chawah fell upon their faces by the mayim , and Adam prayed, saying, "O Yahuah , Elohim of Avraham (Abraham) , Yitzchak (Isaac) , and Ya'akov (Jacob) —though we know them not yet in the flesh but in the promise of the zera (seed) —deliver us from the snare of the fowler! Hide our eyes from vanity and our hearts from the smooth words that lead to she'ol (the grave) . In the Shem (Name) of the Mashiach (Messiah) who is to come, we take refuge. Let his dam (blood) , which shall be sprinkled upon the mizbeach (altar) of the ages, cover our weakness this day!"
10 And Chawah wept and said, " Amein ! Let the Go'el (Redeemer) be our shield, for I am but a vessel of clay, and my strength is as a bruised reed. Hide not Thy face from us, O Elohim , for the sake of the brit (covenant) Thou hast made with the zera of the woman."
11 Now as they prayed with tears and with teshuvah (repentance) , the Shechinah (Divine Presence) , which had withdrawn to a distance, drew near and sent a shaft of or upon the ishah . In that instant, the beautiful form of the woman wavered like a mirage, and the ruach (spirit) within her cried out, and her face became as the face of a nachash full of venom and terror.
12 Then Adam and Chawah knew that it was Satan . And Adam spoke with authority, the authority given to the adam over the works of the adversary, and he said, "Depart from us, Satan ! For it is written in the Sefer HaChayim (Book of Life) that the Mashiach shall bruise thy head, and thou shalt bruise his heel, but the victory belongs to Yahuah !"
13 And Satan , unable to endure the power of the Shem and the tefillah of the faithful, fled howling into the wilderness, and the mayim of the river churned and boiled where he passed, but the stream that flowed toward the remnant remained pure.
14 Then Adam and Chawah arose, and they washed their faces and their hands in the cool mayim , and their hearts were filled with simchah (joy) and todah (thanksgiving) . And Adam said, "This day I have learned that the tefillah of a broken spirit is a two-edged sword against the adversary. The Mashiach shall perfect this weapon, and in His day, the nachash shall be cast into the abyss forever."
15 And Chawah answered, "Truly, my lord, the Yeshuah (Salvation) of Yahuah is our stronghold. Let us return to the me'arah and teach our children the mitzvah of tefillah , that all the zera of adam may know that the Shem of Yahuah is a tower of refuge."
16 So they returned to the me'arah , the Cave of Treasures, and they inscribed upon its walls with a sharp stone the words of the tefillah they had prayed, as a zikkaron (remembrance) for the generations to come, until the day when the Mashiach shall arise as the Ner Tamid (Eternal Light) and Satan shall be no more.

Chapter 63 Adam and Chawah Go to the Mayim to Offer Tefillah; Satan Appears as a Malach Or and Attempts to Deceive Them with a False Promise of Return to the Gan; They Seek an Ot and the Adversary Flees

1 And it came to pass after these things, that Adam and Chawah (Eve), dwelling in the me'arah (cave) of treasures, said one to another, "We have eaten of the herbs of the field, and we have drunk of the spring, but we have not yet bent the knee in tefillah (prayer) this day. Come, let us go forth to the mayim (waters) , that we may wash our faces and lift up our hands to Elohim (God) in the place where the stream flows, for the Davar (Word) has taught us that the lifting of hands is like the evening qorban (offering) ."
2 So they arose, and their hearts were heavy with the memory of the Gan (garden) , yet their hope in the promised zera (seed) sustained them. They took no staff, and they went out from the me'arah toward the river that watered the valley, the same river that flowed from the border of the Gan and separated the land of exile from the dwelling of the Keruvim (Cherubim) .
3 Now when Satan , the nachash (serpent) and mastemah (accuser) , saw them walking in the way, he burned with envy, for he knew that a beriyt (covenant) of rachamim (mercy) had been spoken over them, and that the Mashiach (Messiah) would one day proceed from their loins. He said in his heart, "I will go and deceive them yet again, and perhaps they will abandon the hope of Yeshuah (Salvation) ."
4 So Satan transformed himself into the likeness of a malach or (angel of light) , whose raiment shone like the sun and whose wings were as burnished gold. He took a voice sweet as the shofar of jubilee, and he descended by the river ahead of them, standing upon the bank as if he had been sent from shamayim (heaven) .
5 When Adam and Chawah drew near and saw the shining figure, they fell upon their faces in fear, for the kavod (glory) of a true malach is terrible to the children of basar (flesh) . But the disguised Satan stretched forth his hand and said, "Rise, O Adam and Chawah , for I have been sent from the presence of Yahuah (the Lord) to bring you glad tidings. Your teshuvah (repentance) has been accepted, and the chattot (sins) of the Gan have been forgiven. Arise and follow me, for I will return you to the Gan this very yom (day) , and you shall eat again of the Etz Chayim (Tree of Life) ."
6 But Adam , who had been deceived once by fair words, felt a trembling in his spirit, and the Ruach HaKodesh (Holy Spirit) who indwells the hearts of the penitent gave him discernment. He looked upon the malach and said, "If indeed you are a malach of Elohim , give us an ot (sign) , that we may know your mission is true. For in the Gan , we trusted a voice that spoke contrary to the mitzvah (commandment) , and death entered the world. Show us a token from the Kisei HaKavod (Throne of Glory) , and we will believe."
7 Then Satan , the father of lies, could not produce the ot , for no truth is in him. His radiance flickered like a dying lamp, and his form trembled, for the Shem haKadosh (Holy Name) is a strong tower. He sought to speak more flattering words, but his tongue clave to his palate, and he became silent and was forced to flee from before them, vanishing into the darkness from whence he came.
8 And Adam and Chawah lifted their voices in praise, saying, "Baruch haShem (Blessed be the Name) who has not given us over as prey to the teeth of the accuser! He has kept our feet from the snare of the fowler. Truly, Yahuah is our magen (shield) and our yeshuah ."
9 Then they washed themselves in the mayim of the river, and they stood and prayed a long tefillah , confessing their avon (iniquity) and pleading the brit that was made with the zera of the woman. And the Davar Elohim (Word of God) inclined His ear from shamayim , and a true malach , even Micha'el (Michael) the sar (prince) , was sent to them.
10 And Micha'el said to them, "Be not afraid, for thy prayer was heard. The deception of the adversary shall not prevail against you, for the Mashiach is a consuming fire, and in His day, the nachash shall be cast down forever. Know that the path back to the Gan is not yet opened, but the dam (blood) of the Lamb who was slain from the foundation of the world shall sprinkle the way. Continue in tefillah , and depart not from the me'arah , for the Elohim of all comfort shall provide for your needs."
11 And when they heard these words, simchah (joy) and shalom (peace) filled their hearts, and they gave todah (thanksgiving) to Elohim , and they said, " Amein , may the Ge'ulah (Redemption) come speedily in our days, and may the Malkut (Kingdom) of Yahuah be established on the adamah (earth) ."
12 Then the malach departed into shamayim , and Adam and Chawah returned to the me'arah , guarded by the promise. And this took place before the day when hunger drove them to taste the bitter p'ri (fruit) of the cursed adamah , as it is recorded in the chapter that follows.

Chapter 64 Adam and Chawah Go Forth from the Me'arah and Taste the P'ri of the Adamah; Their Sorrow Multiplies, Yet They Cry Out to Elohim

1 And it came to pass after these things, that Adam and Chawah (Eve) , dwelling still in the me'arah (cave) of treasures, hungered with a great hunger, for the sustenance they had known in the Gan (garden) was no more, and the lechem (bread) of the malachim (angels) had ceased from their mouths.
2 Then Chawah said to Adam , "My lord, let us go forth from this me'arah and seek food from the trees of the field, for our basar (flesh) is faint and our bones cleave to our skin. Perhaps Elohim (God) will have rachamim (mercy) and provide for us a p'ri (fruit) that we may eat and live."
3 And Adam answered her, "Let us go, but let us cover our faces with dust, for the kavod (glory) that once clothed us is stripped away, and we are naked in our chattat (sin) . Let us go forth with weeping, and perhaps Yahuah (the Lord) will look upon our affliction."
4 So they arose and went out from the me'arah , and the light of the sun smote their eyes, for they had been dwelling in the shadow of the rock for many yamim (days) . And they walked upon the face of the adamah (earth) , and their footsteps were heavy with sorrow.
5 And they came to a place where there were trees of the field, and they saw p'ri hanging from the branches, and their eyes longed for it. But the p'ri was not like the p'ri of the Gan , which was filled with the light of the Shechinah (Divine Presence) ; it was small and wanting, and the leaves were dusty.
6 Then Adam stretched forth his hand and plucked of the p'ri and gave also to Chawah , and they did eat. But when they had tasted, their mouths were filled with bitterness like unto gall, for the adamah was cursed for their sake. And they spat out the p'ri and wept aloud.
7 And Adam cried out, saying, "O Chawah, what is this evil that has come upon us? The p'ri of the Gan was sweet as honey from the rock, and its fragrance was the breath of Elohim. But this p'ri is as wormwood and ash. How shall we sustain our nefesh (soul) in this land of exile? For the klalah (curse) has devoured the fatness of the adamah ."
8 And Chawah fell upon her face and beat her breast, and she said, "We have brought this evil upon ourselves! We ate of the tree of which Elohim commanded us not to eat, and now every tree yields bitterness to our taste. Our avon (iniquity) has turned the sweet into bitter, and the or (light) into darkness."
9 Then they sat under the shadow of a withered tree, and the sun beat upon their heads, and their strength was dried up like a potsherd. And the yetzer hara (evil inclination) whispered in their hearts, "Why do you still hope? Elohim has forgotten you."
10 But Adam lifted up his voice toward shamayim (heaven) , even though his heart was heavy, and he said, "O Elohim , my Creator! Look upon the work of Thy hands! We are but dust and ashes, and our days upon the adamah are few and full of sorrow. Hast Thou not said that the zera (seed) of the woman shall crush the head of the nachash (serpent) ? Let that promise sustain us, lest we perish utterly in the bitterness of our souls."
11 And Chawah lifted up her head from the dust and joined her voice with his, crying, " Amein , O Yahuah ! Let the brit (covenant) of rachamim be not broken! Turn the bitterness of our hearts into sweetness by the hope of the Mashiach (Messiah) who is to come, the P'ri of the Etz Chayim (Tree of Life) , in whose day the curse shall be swallowed up."
12 Then the Davar Elohim (Word of God) , which is full of chesed (lovingkindness) , heard the cry of their neshamot (souls) , and though He did not yet remove the bitterness of the p'ri , He sent a gentle ruach (wind) to cool their faces and a cloud to cover the sun, as a sign that He had not utterly cast them off.
13 And the Davar spoke within their hearts, not with thunder as before, but with a still small voice, saying, "I have seen your tears and I have heard your supplication. The p'ri is bitter because of the sin that entered the world, and the adamah groans under the weight of the kelalah . Yet I will not forsake the work of My hands. In the zera that I have promised, the p'ri of the adamah shall again be blessed, and the Gan shall be restored to those who love My Yeshuah (Salvation) ."
14 Then Adam and Chawah were comforted, though their bellies still hungered, and they clung to the davar (word) of promise as a ner (lamp) shining in a dark place. They rose and gathered what bitter p'ri they could find, and they returned to the me'arah , carrying it as a burden and as a memorial of their hope.
15 And on the way, Adam said to Chawah , "The Mashiach shall be the firstfruit of those who sleep, and His p'ri is sweeter than the honeycomb. Let us endure the bitterness of these yamim , knowing that the ge'ulah (redemption) draweth nigh."
16 Then Chawah answered, "Truly, my lord, the Davar has planted a seed in our hearts that no bitterness can choke. I will trust in the Shem (Name) of Yahuah and wait for the Go'el (Redeemer) , who shall turn our mourning into simchah (joy) ."
17 And it was in the evening when they came again to the me'arah , and they laid the bitter p'ri at the entrance, and they prayed and wept until sleep fell upon their eyes, a sleep heavy with sorrow yet lightened by the hope of the Brit Chadashah (New Covenant) that would one day be sealed in the dam (blood) of the Mashiach .

Chapter 65 The Deception at the River and the Great Sorrow of Adam and Chawah; They Resolve to End Their Days

1 And it came to pass after the days of their minchah (grain offering) , that Adam and Chawah (Eve) went forth from the me'arah (cave) of treasures to walk by the river of water that flowed from the Gan (garden) , for their spirits were still heavy and they sought to cool their faces.
2 Then Satan , the adversary, who is a liar from the beginning, beheld them and burned with envy, for he could not bear the shalom (peace) that Elohim had begun to restore to their hearts. He therefore transformed himself into the likeness of an ishah yefat mar'eh (a woman of exceedingly beautiful appearance) , such as had never been seen upon the adamah (earth) .
3 This apparition went down to the river to wash, and the waters shone like gold around her, and her hair was as the night strewn with stars, and her voice was honey and myrrh.
4 And Adam and Chawah saw the ishah and perceived not that it was Satan , for their eyes were still dim with sorrow. And they wondered at her beauty, and the yetzer hara (evil inclination) , which entered into the children of men through the first transgression, stirred within them.
5 Then the ishah lifted up her voice and called to them, saying, "Why do you stand afar off? Come near and behold the pleasantness of this river, for the waters are cool and the pools are deep, and Elohim has given them for the delight of His creatures. Let us rejoice together and forget the toil of the day."
6 But Adam , remembering the davar (word) of Elohim and the commandment to have no portion with strangers, said, "We may not, for we have sinned already and our eyes are open to good and evil, and we must guard our lev (heart) from every snare."
7 Yet the ishah spoke words more flattering than oil and smoother than butter, and Chawah , whose heart had been wounded by the ancient deceit in the Gan , was enticed. She drew near to the water, and Adam , fearing for her, followed after.
8 Then in that hour, the ishah tore away the mask and revealed herself as Satan ha-Mastemah (Satan the Accuser) , and he laughed a bitter laugh, and his voice rumbled like a storm. He said, "Behold, you have sinned yet again against Elohim ! You have looked upon a woman who is not the wife of your bosom, and the desire of the flesh has entered your eyes, and you have defiled the purity of your neshamah (soul) . How shall you now stand before the Kadosh (Holy One) ?"
9 And immediately a great shame, heavier than the skins upon their bodies, fell upon Adam and Chawah . They knew they had been ensnared by the nachash (serpent) once more. They fled from the river bank and hid themselves among the thick reeds, and they covered themselves with dust, and their weeping rose up to shamayim (heaven) .
10 Then Adam cried out in the bitterness of his nefesh (soul) , saying, "O Chawah , what have we done? We have added chattat (sin) upon chattat , and pesha (transgression) upon pesha . Elohim will surely erase our name from under the heavens, for we have broken the covenant in the very hour of His rachamim (mercy) ."
11 And Chawah tore the hair of her head and beat her breast, and she said, "Woe is me, my lord! I am the vessel of destruction, for I have caused my husband to stumble a second time. All our prayers and teshuvah (repentance) are turned to vanity before the throne of Yahuah . Why should we live any longer?"
12 For three yamim (days) and three leilot (nights) they remained by the river, neither eating the dagan (grain) nor drinking the water, for their mouths were filled with the wormwood of remorse. They sat in silence, and the shadow of death covered their faces.
13 Then Adam lifted up his voice, heavy with despair, and said, "O Elohim , the Shechinah (Divine Presence) is far from us, and we walk in darkness. The avon (iniquity) of our hearts has separated us from the or (light) of Thy countenance. It would be better for us to die than to endure this unending shame."
14 And Chawah answered him, her voice a whisper of ashes, "Arise, my lord, let us go up to the summit of the high mountain that overlooks this land of our exile, and let us cast ourselves down. Our dam (blood) shall return to the adamah , and our spirits shall flee to the unseen realm; perhaps then Elohim will no longer be provoked by our existence, and we shall hide our disgrace from all living."
15 So the counsel of the adversary, which he had planted in their hearts like a poisonous thorn, took root. And they arose and set their faces toward the mountain, not knowing that Elohim , whose rachamim endures forever, was watching their steps and preparing deliverance before the blow could fall, as it is written in the chapter that follows.

Chapter 66 Adam and Chawah Attempt Suicide by Casting Themselves from the Mountain, but Elohim Delivers Them

1 Then Adam and Chawah (Eve), being yet in the depths of their sorrow and their avon (iniquity) heavy upon them, wandered forth from the me'arah (cave), and their souls were bitter within them, and they said one to another, "Why should we live any longer? For we have sinned against the mitzvah (commandment) of Elohim (God) , and Satan has deceived us many times."
2 And they wept with a great weeping, and Chawah said to Adam , "My lord, let us go up to the top of the high mountain which overlooks this valley, and let us cast ourselves down from it, that we may die and our nefesh (soul) may depart from this body of basar (flesh) , and we shall return to the adamah (earth) from which we were taken. For Elohim is angry with us, and we have no more portion in His chesed (lovingkindness)."
3 And Adam heard the words of Chawah and was grieved in his lev (heart), yet his spirit was so broken that he consented to her counsel. And they arose and began to journey toward the high mountain.
4 But Satan, the adversary, saw their intent, and he desired to hasten their destruction. So, he transformed himself into the likeness of a malach or (angel of light) and appeared before them on the path, and he said, "Whither go ye, O Adam and Chawah? Why are your faces downcast and your steps heavy?"
5 And Adam answered him and said, "We go to the mountain to cast ourselves down and to die, for we have offended our Elohim , and our chattot (sins) are more numerous than the sand."
6 Then Satan , speaking as a malach , said, "You do well, for Elohim has forgotten you, and it is better for you to perish than to endure suffering. Go quickly, and do what you have purposed."
7 And Adam and Chawah went on, and Satan went before them, rejoicing in his evil heart, thinking that they would surely die and that he would have victory over the seed of the woman.
8 But behold, Elohim looked down from shamayim (heaven) and saw the feet of Adam and Chawah walking toward destruction, and He saw Satan leading them astray yet again. And Elohim was moved with rachamim (mercy) , for though He had decreed death upon them, it was not yet the appointed time for them to die by their own hand.
9 Then Elohim sent His Davar (Word) with a mighty voice from shamayim , and it came as thunder, saying, " Adam! Chawah! Whither are you going? Have you forgotten My brit (covenant) ? Did I not promise you a Redeemer who shall crush the head of the nachash (serpent) ? Will you now seek to destroy the zera (seed) of the Mashiach (Messiah) before it can come forth?"
10 And the voice of the Davar shook the mountain, and Adam and Chawah fell upon their faces, trembling with a great terror; and they could not arise.
11 Then Satan fled from before them with a great cry, for the light of the Davar consumed him and he could not stand in the brightness of the presence of Yahuah (the Lord) .
12 And the Davar Elohim (Word of God) spoke to Adam and Chawah and said, "Arise, for this is not the way of teshuvah (repentance) . Shall you destroy the work of My hands? Shall you spill your own dam (blood) upon the stones when I have not commanded it?
13 "Your lives are not your own, but they are in My hand. And I have appointed the yamim (days) of your sojourning until the time of the ge'ulah (redemption) . Therefore, you shall not die by your own counsel, for the Mashiach shall come forth from your loins, and through him you shall be saved."
14 Then Adam and Chawah wept bitterly and confessed their sin, saying, "We have sinned, O Elohim , in seeking to end the life which Thou hast given us. Forgive our pesha (transgression) according to the multitude of Thy rachamim ."
15 And the Davar answered them, "Arise and return to the me'arah which I have given you as a miklat (refuge) . And know that when the fullness of time comes, My Davar shall become basar and dwell among your children; and He shall offer up His own nefesh as a qorban (offering) for the sins of the world. In that day, all who trust in Him shall not perish but shall have chayei olam (everlasting life) ."
16 Then Elohim stretched forth His hand, and a malach was sent, who took Adam and Chawah and bore them back to the mouth of the me'arah , the Cave of Treasures, and set them down gently.
17 And Adam and Chawah entered the me'arah and fell upon their faces and gave thanks to Elohim who had delivered them from the pit of destruction.
18 And Adam said to Chawah , "Blessed be the Shem (Name) of Elohim who does not deal with us according to our chattot , but has rachamim upon us for the sake of the Mashiach who is to come. Let us no more seek our own death, but let us await the yeshuah (salvation) of Yahuah ."
19 And Chawah answered, "Truly, my lord, let us put our trust in the Davar of Elohim , for His promises are emet (truth) . He has remembered our affliction and has not given us over to the hand of the adversary. Blessed be His Shem forever."
20 And from that day forward, Adam and Chawah no longer sought to lay hands upon themselves, but they trusted in the brit of Elohim and waited for the coming of the Mashiach , who is the Yeshuah of all the ends of the earth.

Chapter 67 The Discovery of the Wheat and the Institution of the Qorban Minchah (Grain Offering)

1 And it came to pass after these things, that Adam and Chawah (Eve) went forth from the me'arah (cave) , sorrowful and weeping because of the wiles of Satan , who had appeared to them as a beautiful woman by the river and had led their hearts astray.
2 And they walked westward from the me'arah , not knowing whither they went, for their spirits were heavy; and they had neither food nor drink, and their bodies were faint.
3 Then Elohim (God) looked upon their affliction and upon the tears of their repentance, and He had rachamim (mercy) upon them.
4 And Elohim sent His Davar (Word) unto them, and the Davar said, "Go forth a little way, and I will show you a sadeh (field) wherein there is dagan (grain) for your sustenance, which you have not planted and have not watered, that you may know that I am Yahuah who provides for those who seek My face."
5 And Adam and Chawah went as the Davar had commanded, and they came to a sadeh that was full of chittah (wheat) , ripe and golden, such as they had never seen since they left the Gan (garden) . And there was also a spring of water beside the sadeh , and a bucket set there.
6 Then Adam rejoiced with a great joy, and Chawah wept for gladness, and they fell upon their faces and worshipped Elohim .
7 And Adam said unto Chawah , "This is a token of Elohim 's chesed (lovingkindness) , that though we have sinned, He has not utterly cast us away. Let us take of this chittah and make a qorban (offering) unto Him, as we did in the Gan with the fruits of the trees."
8 Then Adam took a sheaf of the chittah and beat out the dagan with his hands; and Chawah gathered it into her garment. And they said, "What shall we offer this upon? For we have no mizbeach (altar) in this place."
9 And the Davar Elohim appeared unto them and said, "Gather stones and build a mizbeach according to the pattern I will show you, and upon it you shall offer the firstfruits of the dagan as a minchah (grain offering) , and it shall be a sweet savour unto Me."
10 Then Adam and Chawah gathered stones, and Adam built a mizbeach , placing the stones together with care; and they set the dagan upon the mizbeach as a qorban before Yahuah .
11 And Adam spread forth his hands and prayed, saying, "O Elohim , Maker of heaven and adamah (earth) , accept now this minchah from the work of our hands, which Thou Thyself hast given us. Forgive our chattot (sins) and remember Thy brit (covenant) of mercy, and let this qorban be a remembrance before Thee until the time of the full redemption."
12 And as he prayed, Chawah stood beside him with her head covered, weeping and saying, " Amein , O Yahuah ."
13 Then Elohim looked upon their qorban and upon the humility of their hearts, and He sent down an esh (fire) from shamayim (heaven) , which consumed the minchah upon the mizbeach , and the smoke ascended as a re'ach nicho'ach (sweet savour) before Elohim .
14 And the esh did not harm Adam or Chawah , but it filled their hearts with shalom (peace) and simchah (joy) ; and they knew that their teshuvah (repentance) was accepted.
15 Then the Davar Elohim spoke to them from the midst of the esh and said, "This minchah is a shadow of the true lechem (bread) that I will give you in the latter days. When the Mashiach (Messiah) comes, He shall be the pure qorban , and His basar (flesh) shall be the true lechem for the life of the world. And as this esh consumed the dagan , so shall the Ruach HaKodesh (Holy Spirit) consume your hearts and make them pure."
16 And Adam and Chawah fell on their faces and worshipped, for they understood in part the mystery of the qorban that would be made for the ge'ulah (redemption) of their children.
17 Then Elohim blessed the sadeh and said, "This place shall be holy, and the minchah you have offered this day shall be a chukat olam (everlasting statute) for you and for your seed after you. Three times in the week you shall bring your qorban of dagan to this mizbeach : on the fourth day, on the day of preparation, and on the Shabbat (Sabbath) , as a memorial of My provision and of the qorban that is to come."
18 Then Adam asked, " Adonai , why these three days?"
19 And the Davar answered, "On the fourth day I created the lights in the firmament to divide the yamim (days) and the mo'adim (appointed times) . On the preparation day I shall prepare the body of the Mashiach for the suffering that is to come. And on the Shabbat I shall rest from My work of redemption, and all who trust in the qorban of the Mashiach shall enter into My menuchah (rest) ."
20 Then Adam and Chawah understood these words in part, and they treasured them in their hearts. And they took of the chittah and of the water, and they ate and drank and were satisfied, giving thanks to Elohim .
21 And Elohim adjured Satan not to touch the sadeh of the qorban , and He set a malach (angel) to guard it, so that the minchah might be offered continually before the appointed time.
22 Then Adam and Chawah returned to the me'arah , the Cave of Treasures, rejoicing and blessing the Shem haKadosh (Holy Name) , and they kept the mitzvah (commandment) of the minchah all the days of their life, waiting for the ge'ulah that is in the Mashiach .

Chapter 68 How Destruction and Trouble Is of Satan When He Is the Master. Adam and Eve Establish the Custom of Worship.

1 Then Elohim (God) looked upon Adam and Chawah (Eve) , and upon what had come upon them from Satan , and how he had made them perish.
2 Elohim , therefore, sent His Davar (Word) , and raised up Adam and Chawah from their state of death.
3 Then, Adam , when he was raised, said, "O Elohim , Thou hast burnt and taken from us the corn Thou hadst given us, and Thou hast emptied out the bucket of water. And Thou hast sent Thy malachim (angels) , who have waylaid us from the cornfield. Wilt Thou make us perish? If this be from Thee, O Elohim , then take away our souls; but punish us not."
4 Then Elohim said to Adam , "I did not burn down the wheat, and I did not pour the water out of the bucket, and I did not send My malachim to lead thee astray.
5 "But it is Satan , thy master who did it; he to whom thou hast subjected thyself; My mitzvot (commandments) being meanwhile set aside. He it is, who burnt down the corn, and poured out the water, and who has led thee astray; and all the promises he has made you, verily, are but feint, deceit, and a lie.
6 "But now, O Adam , thou shalt acknowledge My good deeds done to thee."
7 And Elohim told His malachim to take Adam and Chawah , and to bear them up to the field of wheat, which they found as before, with the bucket full of water.
8 There they saw a tree, and found on it solid manna; and wondered at Elohim 's power. And the malachim commanded them to eat of the manna when they were hungry.
9 And Elohim adjured Satan with a curse, not to come again, and destroy the field of corn.
10 Then Adam and Chawah took of the corn, and made of it an offering, and took it and offered it up on the mountain, the place where they had offered up their first offering of blood.
11 And they offered this oblation again on the altar they had built at first. And they stood up and prayed, and besought Yahuah (the Lord) saying, "Thus, O Elohim , when we were in the Gan (garden) , did our praises go up to Thee, like this offering; and our innocence went up to thee like incense. But now, O Elohim , accept this offering from us, and turn us not back, reft of Thy rachamim (mercy) ."
12 Then Elohim said to Adam and Chawah , "Since ye have made this oblation and have offered it to Me, I shall make it My flesh, when I come down upon earth to save you; and I shall cause it to be offered continually upon an altar, for forgiveness and for mercy, unto those who partake of it duly."
13 And Elohim sent a bright fire upon the offering of Adam and Chawah , and filled it with brightness, grace, and light; and the Ruach HaKodesh (Holy Spirit) came down upon that oblation.
14 Then Elohim commanded a malach to take fire-tongs, like a spoon, and with it to take an offering and bring it to Adam and Chawah . And the malach did so, as Elohim had commanded him, and offered it to them.
15 And the souls of Adam and Chawah were brightened, and their hearts were filled with joy and gladness and with the praises of Elohim .
16 And Elohim said to Adam , "This shall be unto you a custom, to do so, when affliction and sorrow come upon you. But your deliverance and your entrance into the Gan , shall not be until the yamim (days) are fulfilled, as agreed between you and Me; were it not so, I would, of My rachamim and pity for you, bring you back to My Gan and to My favour for the sake of the offering you have just made to My name."
17 Adam rejoiced at these words which he heard from Elohim ; and he and Chawah worshipped before the altar, to which they bowed, and then went back to the me'arah (cave) , the Cave of Treasures.
18 And this took place at the end of the twelfth yom (day) after the eightieth yom , from the time Adam and Chawah came out of the Gan .
19 And they stood up the whole night praying until morning, and then went out of the me'arah .
20 Then Adam said to Chawah , with joy of heart, because of the offering they had made to Elohim , and that had been accepted of Him, "Let us do this three times every week, on the fourth day, on the preparation day, and on the Shabbat (Sabbath) , all the days of our life."
21 And as they agreed to these words between themselves, Elohim was pleased with their thoughts, and with the resolution they had each taken with the other.
22 After this, came the Davar Elohim (Word of God) to Adam , and said, "O Adam , thou hast determined beforehand the days in which sufferings shall come upon Me, when I am made flesh; for they are the fourth day, and the preparation day.
23 "But as to the first day, I created in it all things, and I raised the heavens. And, again, through My rising again on this day, will I create joy, and raise them on high, who believe in Me; O Adam , offer this oblation, all the days of thy life."
24 Then Elohim withdrew His Davar from Adam .
25 But Adam continued to offer this oblation thus, every week three times, until the end of seven weeks. And on the first day, which is the fiftieth, Adam made an offering as he was wont, and he and Chawah took it and came to the altar before Elohim, as He had taught them.

Chapter 69 A Wicked Plan Is Carried to a Tragic Conclusion. Cain Is Frightened. "Am I My Brother's Keeper?" The Seven Punishments. Shalom Is Shattered.

1 And so they went on, until they came to a lonely place, where there were no sheep; then Hevel (Abel) said to Qayin (Cain) , "Behold, my brother, we are weary of walking; for we see none of the trees, nor of the fruits, nor of the verdure, nor of the sheep, nor any one of the things of which thou didst tell me. Where are those sheep of thine thou didst tell me to bless?"
2 Then Qayin said to him, "Come on, and presently thou shalt see many beautiful things. But go before me, until I come up to thee."
3 Then went Hevel forward, but Qayin remained behind him.
4 And Hevel was walking in his innocence, without guile; not believing his brother would kill him.
5 Then Qayin, when he came up to him, comforted him with his talk, walking a little behind him; then he hastened, and smote him with the staff, blow upon blow, until he was stunned.
6 But when Hevel fell down upon the ground, seeing that his brother meant to kill him, he said to Qayin, "O, my brother, have pity on me. By the breasts we have sucked, smite me not! By the womb that bare us and that brought us into the world, smite me not unto death with that staff! If thou wilt kill me, take one of these large stones, and kill me outright."
7 Then Qayin, the hard-hearted and cruel murderer, took a large stone, and smote his brother with it upon the head, until his brains oozed out, and he weltered in his dam (blood) before him.
8 And Qayin repented not of what he had done.
9 But the adamah (earth) , when the dam of righteous Hevel fell upon it, trembled, as it drank his dam , and would have brought Qayin to naught for it.
10 And the dam of Hevel cried mysteriously to Elohim , to avenge him of his murderer.
11 Then Qayin began at once to dig the adamah wherein to lay his brother; for he was trembling from the fear that came upon him, when he saw the adamah tremble on his account.
12 He then cast his brother into the pit he made, and covered him with dust. But the adamah would not receive him; but it threw him up at once.
13 Again did Qayin dig the adamah and hid his brother in it; but again did the adamah throw him up on itself; until three times did the adamah thus throw up on itself the body of Hevel.
14 The muddy adamah threw him up the first time, because he was not the first creation; and it threw him up the second time and would not receive him, because he was righteous and good, and was killed without a cause; and the adamah threw him up the third time and would not receive him, that there might remain before his brother a witness against him.
15 And so did the adamah mock Qayin, until the Davar Elohim (Word of God) came to him concerning his brother.
16 Then was Elohim angry, and much displeased at Hevel's death; and He thundered from heaven, and lightnings went before Him, and the Davar Yahuah Elohim (Word of the Lord God) came from heaven to Qayin, and said unto him, "Where is Hevel thy brother?"
17 Then Qayin answered with a proud heart and a gruff voice, "How, O Elohim ? Am I my brother's shomer (keeper) ?"
18 Then Elohim said unto Qayin, "Cursed be the adamah that has drunk the dam of Hevel thy brother; and thou, be thou trembling and shaking; and this will be a sign unto thee, that whosoever finds thee, shall kill thee."
19 But Qayin wept because Elohim had said those words to him; and Qayin said unto Him, "O Elohim , whosoever finds me shall kill me, and I shall be blotted out from the face of the adamah ."
20 Then Elohim said unto Qayin, "Whosoever shall find thee shall not kill thee;" because before this, Elohim had been saying to Qayin, "I shall forego seven punishments on him who kills Qayin." For as to the word of Elohim to Qayin, "Where is thy brother?" Elohim said it in rachamim (mercy) for him, to try and make him do teshuvah (repentance) .
21 For if Qayin had done teshuvah at that time, and had said, "O Elohim , forgive me my chattat (sin) , and the murder of my brother," Elohim would then have forgiven him his avon (iniquity) .
22 And as to Elohim saying to Qayin, "Cursed be the adamah that has drunk the dam of thy brother," that also, was Elohim 's rachamim on Qayin. For Elohim did not curse him, but He cursed the adamah ; although it was not the adamah that had killed Hevel, and had committed avon .
23 For it was meet that the curse should fall upon the murderer; yet in rachamim did Elohim so manage His thoughts as that no one should know it, and turn away from Qayin.
24 And He said to him, "Where is thy brother?" To which he answered and said, "I know not." Then the Creator said to him, "Be trembling and quaking."
25 Then Qayin trembled and became terrified; and through this sign did Elohim make him an example before all the creation, as the murderer of his brother.
